A friend of mine with a 4R bought a re-maufactured long block from a Japanese engine company in LA and put it in himself.
I don't know the cost etc. He picked it up on a pallet at the factory
He has been pretty happy with it and has 60K on it so far.
Wait till you get to the 50K mileage LOL :)
They probably charge 2-3 hrs labor + parts
Most dealers charge for look see "inspections".
See what your owner manual says what should be done at the difference mileage intervals.
They probably charge $100 (each) to drain and fill the diff.
Do you...
I say sell your 2WD and get a 4WD Tundra and enjoy your family trips beginning this summer. You can modify the 4WD truck as needed.
Did you include all the labor and down time costs to do the conversion?
Keep the 4 Runner and get a truck to haul the big stuff.
Most of the off road ride issues with full size truck are "they need more weight in the back" and the have stiff sway bars.
The US 5-Gallon Gerry Cans are getting harder to find. If you have some old rusted out gerry cans cans save the threaded caps for on a newer cans that come with the carb plastic fitting and nozzle.

International made a 4 door truck called the Travelette in the 60's and 70's in long and short bed.
