Mitsubishi didn't win 11 Dakar races with the fastest or most powerful vehicle. They won by reaching the end first without falling apart. :coffeedrink:
The entire 3rd member/carrier is easy to swap, and can be done in a driveway with a jack and helping hand. I swapped a 4.3 LSD diff into my '05.
I have heard rumors that there were 4.9 LSD gearsets made, but I have never seen one in person to confirm. If you want to switch to 4.9 gears, your...
This is everything I normally bring with me when towing. The rear of the Montero is also filled with all of my tools and spare equipment. I drove my STI separately while my dad drove my SUV. I also use AWD (4H) on the 5-speed when towing to help mitigate any trailer swaying effects.
I've used both the 3.5l and the 3.8l engines for towing and offroad. The 3.5l is helped in the 01-02 XLS trim by having 4.9 gears which improve acceleration and torque. The 3.8l has noticeably more power, but that also has to do with the improved intake manifold design (dual length runners)...

My list for your goals would go like this: Montero Sport < Nissan X-Terra = Gen 2/2.5 Montero < Gen 3 Montero XLS < Gen 3 Montero Limited/03+
The Sport is an entirely different vehicle from the full size Monteros. It is an import of the Challenger SUV, but named Montero Sport by the US...
Possibly something to do with the pressure relief valve or the EVAP canister. Check FSM page 17-66. It shows the diagram for the full system. Both of those modules are located behind the right rear tire just past the fuel tank. Also could be the overflow hole in the fill tube.
Try to determine if it is a slow leak or fast leak. Also you may be able to see a drip in the pool while running, but it is hard to tell without an inspection camera. If it is leaking from the o-ring that mine was, then you have about 4 hours of work.
This is how I repaired it:
