Gen 3 Montero traction control vs mud -- tire selection?

I've traveled on many trails like the one in this video. Tires will also make big changes to the available grip on clay or mud. I had been using Dunlop/Goodyear ATs, but I have now switched to Toyo AT2s. Have yet to get stuck in the deep mud or clay that I have found, but I also do not...

Yet another 3rd Gen Montero "Build", also story time!

This subwoofer will bolt into the factory spot with the Infinity system. I bought it, followed FSM to disassembly driver rear interior, and had it running in 3-4 hours. I also took my time with all the plastic connectors to not break them. I believe I used new sheet metal screws to hold it...

    Trailer towing advice

I agree with everyone else. I have used my Gen 3s to tow my race car on an open trailer, but it is 2500-3000lbs total with gear. Any more than this is unnecessary strain on your driveline. Also the V6 suffers horrible gas mileage when towing (9-10mpg), so you aren't saving fuel. Honestly...

    Gearing for Monteros - List

Someone would need to confirm that the differential axle splines on the Sport is the same as a Montero.

Gen 3 Brake Upgrade / Replacement

I have always used OEM pads with OEM rotors or Raybesto solid rotors. Heavier towing could use some mild EBC pads, but I have not had any issues towing with my trailer. I usually have 2000-2500lbs on it when I take the race car to the track. Slotted and drilled rotors will increase the initial...

Heads-Up, Rock Auto Quality Issue, drive shafts

I recommend this as well. I work with a driveshaft shop for custom pieces where I work, but he normally does not build CV joints. Good ones tend to be expensive (customers would rather buy cheap China parts), and he only rebuilds the OEM ones. I always bring him industrial CVs from GKN so he...

When and how to use the off road capabilities of the Montero

I use 45mph for anyone who is new or unsure of making the 2H-4H shift at speed. You are right that it is listed by Mitsubishi as up to 100kmh (~62mph), but this speed is determined by the transmission and transfer case rotational speed with factory sized tires at 62mph. As the tire sizes...

When and how to use the off road capabilities of the Montero

This also might help visualize the torque distribution in the 4HLc and 4LLc modes. Also shows when the rear diff lock can be used when a wheel no longer makes surface contact. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZCkQ5PzmnA

When and how to use the off road capabilities of the Montero

Eye has it right, but that is specific to the Super Select 4WD found on Gen 2 and Gen 3 Limited. It shows 2H-4H-4Hlc-4Llc for those modes. Further note on the Super Select II modes. The 2H-4H shift can be safely made at any speed under 45mph because it uses a viscous coupling. Shifting to...

    Sepstero's 2003 Montero Build Thread

I concur on the thermostat. I had a generic replacement for a while, but switched back to an OEM. $20 vs $10 is not that much of price difference for OEM. The Mitsubishi also has much larger springs and seals. Overall a much more durable part. For what it is worth on the transmission fluid...

    Burnt Rubber Smell Under Load

Maybe a used dealer oversprayed with underbody coating? I'd also check the belts.

    Gen3 Tire Size

I would recommend the Toyo Open Country AT-II tire. I am running P265/70-17 on stock wheels, and they ride very well. A little more noise on smooth roads than a highway based tire (car had a mixed set of Dunlop/Goodyear), but nothing bad. This is the 5th set of these tires to be used in my...

Gen 3.5 - Transmission acting strange, traction control lights intermittently on

Start checking all electrical connections and ground wires going to the transmission. FSM will have wiring diagrams for the dash lights and transmission connections. Also check the transmission fluid level with it's dipstick.

    Gen 3 4.9 Gears (01 w/LSD) What to know?

I do not have 4.9 gears, but I installed a 4.3 LSD. The Mitsubishi fluid would be recommended for the clutch pack as the others may not have the right friction additives. The torsen/gear system does not care about the oil, but the fiction modifiers will allow the clutch to slip enough to build...

    Gearing for Monteros - List

Used diffs are the best option. I have a used unit from an 01 that has 35k more miles on it since I installed it. The only ring and pinion sets I ever found worth buying were OEM and $600 a set. Plus the cost of install makes it $1000 vs $300 for a complete assembly. The factory units are...

    Question: Gen 3.5 Ltd 3.8L vs. 255-85-R16's

These will not fit as far as I know. The Gen 3 has independent rear where the sport uses a solid axle like the Gen 2. These have different housings to fit into the solid axle and cannot be fitted to a Gen 3.
