I think if you have it fold out you might as well have it overhang the rear of the Jeep so you can use it as a shade canopy and or attach a screen or tent.
I know what you mean.
In my H3 you can reach up inside the door (the jack compartment) and push up on the door release to open the rear door.
I"m sure you could make a latch to open the door from the inside.
Does anyone with a short bed Taco have a shell with a mini-tent extension to cover the tailgaite and your feet while sleeping?
I guess you could always make up something with a tarp.
The Taco TRD Off Road Package is on my list as a future vehicle esp. since I have an H3 and GM i s heading...
Has there been anything more from AEV on their AEV JK Outpost Camper Top (SEMA 2006)?

it is pretty hard to beat either the Toyota Taco or 4-Runner.
You can't get a stick shift in the 4-Runner but rear lockers are available in both.
The 4-Runner has more lockable space for your atronomy gear than a pick-up with a camper shell.
Have you looked a 4-door Wrangler?
How does that ARB compressor with mini tank do for filling up tyres?
I have a portable Extreame Outback but it's size make under hood mounting difficult.
I would go with a Toyota locker in the rear and maybe an ARB in the front.
Since you are doing ring and pinons you might as well add the lockers now.
I used to figure $1000/axle for gears, locker and labor.
I had these in my YJ and they were great.
They bolted to the factory mounts.

I thought it had been outlawed for too much salt, fat and sodium nitrate.
I am going to get some to have in my food box for breakfast after the ice in the ice chest runs out.
It all looks great and well designed
Having a spare on the front of the truck probably hurts mileage and all that gear and swing outs blocking the back door of the camper looks complicated.
Action Packers and Pelican Cases work for me. I have 2 Pelican cases (one for food and one for stove and pots and pans).
They are water and critter proof.
The large Action packer can be pretty heavy when loaded.
I'm sure they inspect the tires before they re-tread them. I'd bit a bit concerned of sidewall life span on tires that weren't designed to be re-treaded.
FYI
I haven't seen canned bacon in years.
