    ImNoSaint's H3 Build

Yes, big difference and improvement in travel. Now it keeps all four patches planted where I've crossed it up before and teetered on only two.

    ImNoSaint's H3 Build

Front Suspension Upgrade and Leveling From what I can tell by records and wear, the H3 had the OEM shocks at 125k miles. Its handling is lethargic and reminiscent of an old Buick Electra in its floating feel, characteristics no one wants in an adventure vehicle. After researching...

    ImNoSaint's H3 Build

Cobra CB and ARB Install Two important tools on the Montero build are now on the H3, a CB and an awning. CB - The H3 doesn't have DIN room for an additional component like a CB radio, so I went with a device that has a head unit that mounts under the dash with a compact remote handset that...

Coolest Camping & Other Gadgets (and some Gift Ideas)

Two of our favorite pieces of kit - The Volcano is made in Springville, Utah. We bought the non-propane model for less than a hundred bucks at Sportsmans'. It's 15.5 inches in diameter and collapses down to five inches high. Makes an excellent smoker as well. And the Exped down-filled air...

Registrating not only for the mechanical prowess, but for the prose to boot.

    ImNoSaint's H3 Build

Less 18 Cubic Feet I mentioned earlier about dealing with almost half the amount of cargo space in the H3 compared to the Montero. Less 18 cubic feet requires lightening the load. This image below is from our Grand Staircase trek: All that gear decompressed looked like this: And while...

    Montero Gen 1, 2, 3 questions.

Searching for more of a remote kayak put-in at Lake Powell we took a trail that goes into the north end of Warms Springs Bay, the last half mile of which is sand dunes right to the shore. We were fully loaded, kept it out of 4Low, maintained momentum and made it in and out, up and down large...

    Montero Gen 1, 2, 3 questions.

Ditto on the traction control, but in the sand, rivers and on ice. My '03 Limited had traction control and a limited slip rear diff and traction was never a reason it couldn't go forward. BTW, cnutgo, you've got a great looking ride. Makes me miss mine. Tall and skinny is a great way to go.

    ImNoSaint's H3 Build

I did not. All I was able to find at the time I was considering this was a less-than-reputable chip upgrade.

    ImNoSaint's H3 Build

PCM Update Been a week on the upgraded PCM from PCM of NC and I have to say that the H3 has awakened. All that was promised has been delivered and then some - more torque and pull off the line and up the slope, remarkably better throttle response, better shift points on acceleration both on and...

    First time out....SUCCESS

Great report and welcome to your new habit. With this in mind I've found that everything needs to justify its existence on my vehicle in size, utility and weight (spouse and dogs are exempt). After years of moto-camping and kayaking we were already outfitted with small, light-weight gear and...

A diverse group of trucks explore Utah (Canyonlands National Park specifically)

Great report and images. It's always fun to see someone else's perception of our backcountry. Desert pin-striping is part of the price of admission here.

Southern Utah: Skutumpah to Willis Creek

No coincidence, indeed. Thank you. Will do. As for the dogs and water, we have no choice. While these two are remarkably obedient, their DNA kicks in whenever they're in the vicinity of water and there's nothing one can do to stop them from immersing. Interiors be damned. I modded my previous...

    Best Offroad GPS unit

This thread seems pretty flushed out, so forgive me in adding a resource that might be helpful and an observation. While a bit dated, this link gets into a solid rubric for evaluating needs and apps, answers questions about iPhones and GPS integration, along with tips for power management and...

Southern Utah: Skutumpah to Willis Creek

It was really more by accident that we came across the Willis Creek Trail. On Pioneer Day morning (a State holiday in Utah), we were looking for dog-friendly day hikes close to Hurricane, something that would get us out of the hottest day of the year so far, with water for Ginger and Maryann. In...

    Build Thread: 2003 Montero XLS: Ol'Betsy #6

I went with the HD set up. I also mounted 33" Big Horn Mudders inflated to factory specs on the road. I appreciated the better handling characteristics as a daily driver, as well as a long hauler to the coast, 1400 miles round trip. Big improvement all around.

    Build Thread: 2003 Montero XLS: Ol'Betsy #6

Hi Phil, nice work on your Gen III. You asked previously in the thread about airlift bags. I tried a set on my Gen III but they didn't survive the amount of off-road travel we do. And I understand the aversion to aftermarket suspension, but the OME build I did on mine was well worth it, both off...
