    Australia: The Long Way Downunda

Ah Scott, You just need to visit for a bit longer to properly understand the Vegemite obsession. I did not fully comprehend until one severely hung over morning when I was craving something salty. Out came the vegimite on on a piece of toast followed by some fresh avocado and an egg with runny...

80 Series - Broken front diff housing

Very good eye, that was in fact gear oil. The very oil that lead me to find the damaged housing in the first place...:sombrero:

80 Series - Broken front diff housing

Thanks for the feedback. I'll have a good look when I get the cruiser crossed up over some ruts or obstacles next time. I should have had a look when I was doing this track over at Landcruiser Mountain Park... No worries with the language, I'm following you.

    Australia: The Long Way Downunda

Paul, I could be wrong, but the Dolium Ltd. crew is mostly in Western Australia. On the eastern side, most of their gear is distributed via Opposite Lock. I've never seen them at the 4WD shows here. Cheers, P

Opinion: best roof rack for the LC80, why?

Roof racks Scott, My two cents. Started with an ARB steel roof rack. Absolutely bomb proof but was over 100 lbs. Min 3 person job to install/remove. Would actually recommend 4 people. Bottom line, too heavy and too tall for my application. Next used two Rino Rack cross bars. Nice and...

80 Series - Broken front diff housing

Jan, Very valid point. That's why I've got a replacement (2nd housing now) sitting in the shed. I had picked up a replacement but after a very close inspection found that it was in worse shape than my busted one. The longer term plan is to strip down the front axle and rebuild the other one...

80 Series - Broken front diff housing

Diagnosis - impact caused break then fatigue caused cracking Well after finding this issue, I had to investigate. With a few trips to the tool store for a new trolley jack and some jackstands and healthy dose of wrenching, this is what the underside of cruiser looked like... I did not do...

80 Series - Broken front diff housing

For the 80 series LC experts, a question I have for you. Have you ever seen or heard of a front lower control arm mounting bracket break (right hand side) on an 80 series? This is what I found recently, hmm where is this diff oil coming from? More diff oil, can't be too good. Further...

    London to Australia (ish)

Place to stay in central Queensland. Just caught up with your tread and a bit of your blog. I see that you've been within 125 Km's of where I'm situated at the moment (Biloela, QLD). Not sure of the route you are planning when heading to Cape York but if you need to stop in for some water or...

Suggested sight while in South Australia Scott, Glad you enjoyed Fraser Island, it's a beautiful spot. Not overly happy that my plans fell through... :( I noticed a gap in your itinerary: Flinders Range: June 22nd-28th Route back to Brisbane (undecided) Leave for US on 30th, though I might...

Pulling my 1HZ Injection Pump, Injectors & more, ??'s

1HZ Reliability Lance, My two cents, if you are after reliability and simplicity don't add the turbo. These engines do ok with 6-8 psi boost but long term you have the potential of cracking a head once you add forced induction. Cheers, P

Pulling my 1HZ Injection Pump, Injectors & more, ??'s

1HZ Engine work Lance, Late to the party here but have a 1HZ and have worked on it a bit. My thoughts are: Do the base line (air filter, fuel filter and injectors). They can all lead to smoke and are relatively cheap to rebuild/replace compared to other components. Replace the cam shaft seal...

    Australia: The Long Way Downunda

QLD options I have not been on ExPo too much of late but did manage to catch this thread :sombrero: Not sure what your agenda is but you may want to consider the following: 2011 Finke Desert Race - June 10 - 13th Simpson desert - Lake Eyre given all the water we've had so far this year...

Time in QLD Scott, This is great news! I'll second a trip to Fraser. Out of curiosity, what part of the Outback will you be visiting, by definition it's a large place... I'm very keen to catch up for a beer while you are in Queensland. Cheers, P

Colin, Great to hear from you. Moreton is nice but Fraser is simply amazing. I was just thinking about our next trip there as I was typing the updates. The next trip is to Longreach, QLD to take in "Easter in the Outback". We've managed to escape most of the flooding. The biggest issue for...

Working on performance... One other niggling issue that any 1HZ owner will experience is the lack of power from the normally aspirated engine. Through the local 4WD competition scene, I'd met a local diesel specialist. He is a mad Nissan 4.2 diesel man but works on all diesels. After putting...
