I don't think a RTT is for you... Given all the cons you provided... pretty much says so.......

I use the 8'5" ladder on my RTT... Truck is lifted 4" from stock.... Plenty ladder, as it is a dont extended fully (see pic)

Different manufacturers use different methods... some use a sandwich system, others use clip-ons... others use variety of stiching, glue, not on that order... Best would be to contact the particular brand you are interested in.... Good luck...

I don't see me car-camping in temps lower than 15/10ºF, so I'm going to order either the 3" or 2" thermo-plastic tubing and adapting it to my set up... luckily the company (Rubber-Cal) is local to me and i could pick up this stuff the same day...

What about getting some of that thermo-plastic tubing in 3" diameter.. you could slide the 2.5" into it and call it a day...
