Last I heard the new Ranger and Bronco both will be IFS. But I'm not a Ford guy so I haven't been following the hoopla bringing either back that closely. As a Jeep fighter the Bronco will play second fiddle. The off road types just gravitate to the solid axle stuff. The FJ Cruiser is proof...
Thanks on the compliment on my ride. It suits my needs well. I'm a squarebody nerd and don't want to dive into something newer. Other than robbing newer drivetrain like we've done with mine.
The problem here is GM or any other domestic company for that matter is they are marketing trucks...
The DSSV spool valve shocks that the ZR2 have must have been overlooked. Granted they aren't remote resi Fox units that everybody knows, but they are trick hardware in their own right. GM's got full digital gauge packages in trucks and cars. Pretty cool reconfigurable setups too. GM took a...
Blah blah blah...I hate Chevy, I love my Toyota. Contradictions abound. Hate GM IFS, but loves the IFS in a Yota? Damn dude, they are extremely similar setups with coil over shocks on the front. I had to stop watching halfway through.
You do have your right to your opinion for sure...
So you prove a point. Rather than going through a full build you've added decent tires, some inside storage and hit the road. No build needed. Might be a reason why so many others don't have a build on here either.. They are out using them.
You know seeing a domestic anything out on the trail is rare. Unless I've been out with Larry in his K10, I did not hit a trail in the mountains of Colorado and see more than 1 or 2 other domestic trucks out at the same time. All I saw was Jeeps and Toyotas.
What the hell does it matter...
Rough country will get you by, just pitch the shocks. It's still going to ride like a schooner. I know as I have 4" rough country springs on the front of mine. Take what you saved on springs and buy Bilstiens. Even the basic 5100's they list for 2-4" lift will work. Shop around and you can...
The 465 is extremely common. GM used it up to 1991. Pretty simple to work on. Only main downfall is horrible gear splits. Oh and a dump truck sized shift pattern. Looks like a fairly solid truck.
My buddy Larry (look him up here if you really want a drool session) did the swap over at his place. He likes keeping things factory looking. We built it to drive for sure. More places to go.
I don't have a build thread over here as I've got two versions going on over on CK5.com and 67-72Chevytrucks.com. The one on CK5 is the one I update first. Here's the link to it.
My build thread.
If there is one thing I can state, these trucks don't have to ride like buckboard wagons...
CK5 really started out for the Blazers, but really they are all pretty similar and with the trucks and Suburbans. All things GM truck get discussed over there.
There are a couple other weak points that ORD has done really well to address the issues.
The shackle flip on the rear changes...
Oh there are plenty that have jumped on the squarebody bandwagon. Just not all of them go overlanding. CK5.com is probably the best technical resource from full blown crawlers to stockers and everything in between. Many take them on long runs and short local weekend trips.
ORD is the place...
Looks like a solid base for a good build. Squarebodies are pretty darn capable in stock form so it should handle your tasks well. Looking forward to the build and it getting used.
Hancock and Hagerman are pretty easy for a fullsize. As the OP noted on the west/south side of Hancock pass is a tight switchback I've always had to take a 3 point turn coming down in my K5. Just went through it last month. The east side is rocky, but not bad if you pick the right line...
I don't think I did a trip report over here. But I did over on CK5.com, I'll link it below. Here's one of the video's I processed of our gopro footage. I will say, it does not have the production value of 99Discovery's excellent videos. But from that one you can look at the other ones...
I prefer the vintage iron for sure. For me it's the Chevy variety, but I can appreciate the love for an early Bronco. I've helped my Dad work on multiples as a kid and had a buddy in college that built a couple. One of which we ended upside down in on an icy highway, spoiler alert we both...
I agree. We got back from the trip and I searched all over for details on the racetrack, trip reports or anything. Didn't come up with much except side by sides and some motos hitting it. NO FULLSIZES as far as trip reports went.
I did end up snapping a stub shaft on my front axle coming...
