    Rear Lockers

I also live in the Rocky Mountains and have used our LR4 with HD on many trails, to include Engineers Pass. The rear locker worked well. That said, I don't think a rear locker is a complete deal breaker. I do think a 2 speed xfer case is a minimum. Fully loaded on a trip these trucks can be...

Tow anti sway options for LRs with air suspension

The LR4 has Trailer Stability Assist - "In order to keep trailer sway to a minimum, the Land Rover LR4 offers Trailer Stability Assist, which detects the natural movement of the trailer as it sways at over 50 MPH and adjusts automatically to prevent the vehicle from losing control of its load. Does the rep of "unreliable" still hold true?

At $200 for an alignment you have a dealer or a local cost/tax issue, not a LR issue. My recent LR4 alignment was $120. Newer LR's are more complex, resulting in repair by the owner more difficult but not impossible. Access to help from the community is much better these days with forums...

Does the rep of "unreliable" still hold true?

For pre-owned vehicles, not just Land Rovers, the only thing that matters is usage profile and maintenance history. Previous owners can be easy on a vehicle or they can trash them, no matter what they paid for them. There are poorly maintained LR4's that wouldn't make it across a state while...

Towing an “adventure trailer” with disco I or II?

Reality check ...... you're in Telluride, Colorado at 8700'. Engine power output is down roughly 25% as a starting point. I'm at 6500' so down 20%. My previous experience was with IH Scouts, 100" wheel base, ~4500 lbs and 175 hp at sea level. We camped all across Colorado, from tents to popups...

    RRC Ignition Coil Specs

Looks like you figured it out. The correct Lucas coil is a RTC5628/DLB198 at 1.5 ohms, 12v.

How often do RRC's need head gaskets replaced

As always, depends. There was a early grey market for RRC's. Those would have been dual carburetor 3.5l petrols up to 1985. EFI introduced in 1986 for the 1987 re-entry into US market. There are also late 70's and mid-80's RRC's available every so often and they have a variety of engines. Head...

    I want an LR4 and I have a question

Seems like the local Land Rover dealer offers HD equiped LR4's on a regular basis. =LR4&page=1&show_all_filters=false"]Two LR4's, both with rear lockers.. One V8, one SCV6 Landmark (ouch on price but they know the market wants HD LR4's) Usual disclaimer ...... no financial interest in LRCS...

    LR4 spare tire options

Might help to specify the tire size. I run a fully inflated General Grabber AT2 285/60-18 in the factory spare tire location - underside. I would not work if I used a factory hitch which protrudes into the underside area. Problem solved with a Rhino hitch.

A "Toyota Guy" Buys a Classic

I had to reshape my DI rear wheel arch to accommodate 265's. I did not "trim". The body panels are aluminum and shape relatively easily with a few body tools after drawing your new desired circular line. The 265's also likely rub on the front trailing arms. You can adjust the steering stops or...

    Overland Journal: Discovery I, 5-speed

Good point. The TR7 was the best selling model in Triumph history. Found one on jack stands for $700. Bought it, invested a little elbow grease and had it for one summer. One person yelled out "Nice Fiat!" after driving past them. The Disco5 might be Land Rovers "The shape of things to come"...

NAS LR3 build with an overseas twist

Many years ago when I was much younger I had a service call in Jamestown, ND. Arrived at the hotel and was surprised to see a power pole at each parking spot. It was -13degF..... at 2pm. Realized I should plug my rental in if I wanted it to start in the morning. The work was outside all week...

A "Toyota Guy" Buys a Classic

OME 2" HD lift works well on a DI. I wouldn't go over 2" as you get into other driveline issues. Prefer a somewhat wider tire in Colorado so have run 245's and 265's / 16's. The 265's rub on full lock but add some ground clearance. Prefer the flat SD rack as you can then haul all sorts of stuff...

    Overland Journal: Discovery I, 5-speed

Agreed. Locked DI's / Defenders are few but work very well when called upon. And as you note for "most uses" the ETC's are fine. Personally I said a HD rear locker was a minimum when considering a LR4 after witnessing the "magic" / issues on that dealer trip. I do use my LR4 on Colorado trails...

    Overland Journal: Discovery I, 5-speed

True, except when your on a Land Rover dealer day trip and the ETC's can't do the broken down granite, loose rock hill climb and you can see them internally grumbling. The locked Defender? Walked right up.

    Overland Journal: Discovery I, 5-speed

DI/Defender with front and rear lockers will smoke the ETC's all day long. Why? Because traction control is reverse ABS, slowing forward progress in the search for traction. Been there, seen them side by side, hill climb fails and successes.

Discovery SVX at LA Auto Show

Hmmm ...... took our new off the dealer lot 98' Disco I wheelin on Colorado trails, with factory Michelin tires. Not your typical gravel road, actual 4WD trails. Took the same truck over Engineer's Pass and several other Southwestern Colorado trails over the next several years. Performed well...
