Made it out of the Front Range of CO last Wednesday before Snowmageddon 2024 fully hit (16-20" in Denver/Boulder, and 40"+ in the foothills) on our planned trip to Durango/Purgatory ski area. Van load of my wife, 21yr and 14yr old sons, our Boston, and myself.
We encountered HEAVY snowfall...
In short, yes.
I don't have a transit, but I fit the largest tires I could (255/85/16, just under 33") on our 4x4 Sprinter without having to lift. The extra clearance under the pumpkin is nice, and they look sweet too. Bonus on our rig is that the 33" spare still 'fits' in the OEM location...
Just a few notes. Not that I'm a professional up-fitter, but I did build out our van from an empty cargo (with help from my wife and oldest son) - besides the SMB top.
We build our van to carry 5 and sleep 4 (or more if that 5th was small and could sleep on the bench). We are a family of 4...
Stopped for a quick pic coming home from riding my mnt bike (playing hooky from work  )
Early Oct
I have photos of a bunch of previous vehicles at this spot just outside of Boulder, it's just very photogenic 📸
Made a quick trip to Chaco Canyon in NM to see the eclipse this weekend. Wife, youngest son, and pooch on board.
Left the Boulder CO area after work on Friday, camped outside of the park on BLM land/parking lot (arrived at 1:30am), viewed the eclipse in the park (so cool), toured some Pueblos...
Nice info on the pulley issue and fix - thanks! How many miles on your rig? (makes me think I should go listen for weirdness on mine)
Just to add to the cool plane pics. I went on a fly-in fishing trip in Ontario with my father and youngest son, 13, this summer (did the trip with my oldest...
And the prevalence of such failures are exaggerated. Not every Sprinter (or even more than a very low % of them) requires $16k worth of exhaust system work within the first 120kmi. If something does go wrong in the system, its more likely to require A new part, not all of it replaced. But...
Went on a 3 day CO tour, from the Boulder area (home) through Crested Butte and then Owl Creek Pass in the Uncompahgre national forest (which is gorgeous). My wife, sons (20 & 13), our Boston, and myself.
Photos not quite in the order they occurred, but whatever...
Chimney Rock -...
I have the Alpine swivels as well (well, one on the passenger seat). They are nice units!
Front seats look good! You going to update the bench to match?
I'd like to swap the rear bench out of my NCV3 to the 'reclining' VS30, but my bed is right behind the bench so the reclining wouldn't...
Like I've said before - CCV is local to me, but I drove 900+mi to Austin to get a SMB top installed.
They are ~the same $$, but the SMB process was as smooth as could be. Arrived in Austin, dropped the van off, had a great time with the wife and kids in the city (pools and Barton Springs)...
"Espresso machine equipped" haha!
This will be good. You gotta escape next winter man. I'm loosely planning on Baja for x-mas '23, so you have 7 months - GO!
Truer words have not been spoken.
Both are fine for what most want to do with a 8000-9000lb camper van. If you're building it out to actually live in, it will be heavy.
I will say that my 144 low top Sprinter '4x4' on 33"s is pretty damn capable, in spite of the wacky F/R split. Although...
