Well no as to your local "data". But that VoiP call does need an infrastructure to route calls and move between wifi spots for call continuity. That is not free.

weboost (Wilson Electronics) Drive 4G-S Cell Phone Signal Booster Kit #470107

Read this thread: Best IPhone for Rural Coverage Not saying buy an IPhone. It's a good discussion that highlights the Australia Blue Tick rating system. Best I can tell the S3 is not Blue Tick rated. Some discussions note it performs poorly in fringe areas. A booster may help but maybe a...

Have we seen this before? Think Microsoft and Skype. Carriers didn't like Skype because it would potentially reduce revenue. Carrier dislike of Skype was immediately transferred to Microsoft, post acquisition. Carriers control access to mobile market. How is Microsoft mobile doing these days...

Calling LR3 and LR4 lowers, loyalists, cool aid drinkers and skeptics...

Probably a difference in trails frequented. For me it was Longwater, Metberry, Hackett and Northrup gulches before the fires. Commonly referred to as "The Gulches". Northrup was closed years ago. Too many parties and a exit trail named Widowmaker.

Not sure how this differs from T-Mobile's Wifi product offering. T-Mobile calls some of the Google features "next-gen" wifi calling. Phones are not restricted to Google's Nexus. 6. Basically VoiP + phone number management/routing. Is this Google just rebranding an existing service? Edit add...

For the many years of off road travel throughout the Colorado mountains one vehicle that is absent is the full size pickup. Some try and eventually sell/trade them off for more capable and appropriately sized vehicles. The full size PU's that are modified are for show, the local bar to pick up...

Thought I would add the links to the Blue Tick testing and the results for the 5S - 5s has an aluminium housing which changes the transmission characteristics (ie intereferes with) to/from the antenna. The difference may be very slight, but highly noticable in borderline coverage areas. Here we...

Both use the Qualcomm WTR1605L LTE transceiver chip. Found this testing: Blue Tick testing - how Telstra tests smartphones Results: iPhone 5C - Blue Tick rated iPhone 5S - not Blue Tick rated iPhone 5C or 5S blue tick? From discussion at link: The 5c has a plastic housing which doesn't...

Good observation! Comparison of mobile phone standards Disadvantages of IS-95 (CDMA one) - Breathing of base stations, where coverage area shrinks under load. As the number of subscribers using a particular site goes up, the range of that site goes down. - Because IS-95 towers interfere with...

Location, location. You're East, I'm West. As for phone reception/reliability, you have witnessed the outcome of design AND test. The theory was good, the outcome not so. Antenna performance is about front-end electrical design, physical placement and surroundings. For Apple they have...

    Best Iphone for Rural Coverage

So the kool-aid must be why my Sister-in-Law's AT&T phone worked and my Verizon had NO service while in the middle of an area shown on the Verizon coverage map as 4GLTE? Oh, and it wasn't just a dead zone, unless you can define dead zones as 3 to 5 miles in size. Point is, many of the carrier...

    Best Iphone for Rural Coverage

First criteria is location (Have the service providers even invested in infrastructure for an area). Second is hardware/antenna technology selected. Third is device design (ask Apple). Verizon is more of a east coast network. AT&T is more of a west coast network. Review their coverage maps and...

    Best Iphone for Rural Coverage

Comparing coverage maps, AT&T has the best coverage West of the Colorado front range. (personal Verizon vs. AT&T experience as of 2 weeks ago) Verizon might be better East of the Rockies but might be questionable. Be careful of Verizon coverage maps. They are not accurate, more marketing than...

    roof rack mount options?

I would be surprised if today's roof rack mounts provide low impedance/good conductivity between the rack itself and a metal roof. Many roof racks use combinations of channels and swedged in hardware, breaking that electrical path. This is done by manufacturers to address corrosion. That said...

    roof rack mount options?

An aspect that many miss. Mounting to a roof rack adds capacitance to one side of the virtual dipole antenna and impedance to the rf ground. It's like sandwiching a capacitor between the antenna and rf ground. Adding dc grounds to the rack could actually result in even lower performance as the...

Where do I start (Land Crusier guy considering Rover)

Having a 1978 FJ40 is similar to my path from a 1975 Scout. I moved to a 98 Discovery I and then LR4. Basically tractor to very capable SUV. Go for a 2008/9 LR3 or 11/12/13 LR4 with rear locker.

Discovery Sport vs. Grand Cherokee Overland vs. 4Runner TRD

OUCH! Didn't know the 2016 Montero was ground chuck. Could be. LOL Never know if some have a champagne taste on a beer budget. In any case, I would consider the Discovery Sport, even 1st year, over a GC.
