The LR4 — Crossing America Offroad with Tom Collins at the helm!

I've never been a fan of 18" wheels - mainly because the one time I did have a set, it was difficult to find tires on short notice. Is this improving? Are rugged 18" tires becoming more available without having to order them from distant cities?

    Equipt's Chaser Overhaul

Thanks for the honest answer Paul - even the bit on the sentimental part. I have a feeling that "sentimental value" plays a role in a lot of peoples choices on such things (I'm no exception), whether they want to admit it or not. I'm no stranger to the "little project that turned into a big...

    Equipt's Chaser Overhaul

I'm sure that there is sound reasoning behind the answer to this question - but it needs to be asked: Why go through such an extensive overhaul instead of simply starting with a new trailer? It sounds like the box and lid are about all that is being kept, and considering the amount of "non...

    2002 Four Wheel Camper Hawk

Kyle is traveling this week - not sure if he will be checking the forum or not. As of 3 days ago - the camper was still for sale. The quickest way to get in touch with him would be the phone number (text or call) in the first post. I know it has a Dometic (?) 3-way fridge (AC/DC/Propane), I'm...

    Trans-America Trail

I agree - it's a great ride. Considering the price of the maps & the frequency that they are updated, I'd suggest only buying the maps that you are actually going to use in the near future. That way when you actually get to the trail, you have the most current version. Roads are constantly...

Do you OX 'Lessons Learned' Packing/Gear List Modifications

My experience has been that I go through less food than normal due to the on-site vendors. It's just easier to grab something on the go, than walk all the way back to camp and make every meal there. This may not be as big of a deal for people who are there on day passes, since their schedules...

    choosing a 29er ...

Jeff - it's a bad time of year to buy bikes in Tucson. Late spring/early summer is better (college students are liquidating assets & getting out of town). I'd be wary of bikesdirect - they list some nice components, but to get their price down, everything else is complete junk. Pretty much...

Oil Leak BMW R1100s - calling you wrenches

It's a BMW, its going to be expensive. Just sign the title over to me, I'll remove the offending bike (leak and all) free of charge. Then you'll have room for a new *something*. (yea - I have no idea how much it will cost or how hard it will be to fix).

Oil Leak BMW R1100s - calling you wrenches

I have bad news amigo - that leak is going to be tough to fix, and it won't be cheap. Take Mikes advise and just buy a Ducati. In the mean time, I'll bring the trailer up and get that POS BMW out of your way. Just have the title notarized and I'll be up as soon as I get back from the land of...

The LR4 — Crossing America Offroad with Tom Collins at the helm!

Really? It's a great trip. Hell, it's an awesome trip. I'd recommend it to anyone that want's a diverse taste of American scenery. But really, it doesn't need to be over played. It's not the Dakar rally where you need some crazy strategy sessions to figure out who/what/when/where. Grab...

The LR4 — Crossing America Offroad with Tom Collins at the helm!

That used to be the case - but by 2007 or 2008, the route was changed to eliminate all of the private land. The route is continually being refined as roads open & close (particularly in Oregon), so this years map and next years will be different. Since they will be winging it, it will be...

Looking for advice on bodywork & painting my rig myself

I don't want to keep beating a drum here - but I'd say go with the two step on both of them. Start with the 'burb. The practice there will give you a bit of experience & lead to a better quality finish when you paint the truck.

Looking for advice on bodywork & painting my rig myself

Easy to get a decent HVLP gun for under $200. Heck - you can borrow mine for a month or two if you want. A cold beer & a cigar at camp some night would cover the rental fee. $300/rig on paint + supplies is going to be tough, but not impossible. It's the little stuff that will eat the budget...

Expedition Photography/Video - GoPro VS DSLR

I use both - and a Go Pro is absolutely no replacement for even an entry level dSLR. The Go Pro is great for what it is - a dash camera that you can strap to your head (or chest, or helmet, or . . . ). It's almost complete lack of any adjustment is what makes it great. Just point it in the...

Looking for advice on bodywork & painting my rig myself

Good point. You could also consider "donating" the job to the CC. When I was in high school, the auto body program painted cars for free - with the understanding that it would be one of the students doing the work. Of course, you lose the father/son bonding deal by doing that route.

Looking for advice on bodywork & painting my rig myself

I'm not a "pro" (far from it), but I've laid paint on a few things . . . I've gone the "industrial paint" route - and in the end, I'm always happier with the automotive paints. It's not horribly expensive unless you start looking at small quantities or red. Red pigment is expensive. In fact...

In need of Dodge 12v owners opinions

$5500 is a good price if you are after a standard cab truck - but be wary of that transmission. At 170K, you may be looking at a rebuild before too long. To have any of the big builders do it right, plan on spending a few thousand for it. Also, check the casting number on the block - "53" is...

    Solar House Battery Set-Up

Your solar charge controller and shore power "controller" (a simple battery charger) will be two separate items. Connect the house battery directly to the starting batteries, with the load limiting & isolating devices of your choice. I've found that a single fixed 100w solar panel with full...

AZ: Bill banning OHV enforcement on fed lands signed

I believe that in certain circumstances, there are legitimate reasons to close roads. This is not one of them.
