    Towing a 16ft Airstream with a 4runner? Other alternatives?

I was thinking 20' (what I had) My math above still works and proves the point even further, 16' AS's are closer to 15% TW, so ~500 lbs.....even though the GVWR is 3500, payload is far and above limiting factor....

    Towing a 16ft Airstream with a 4runner? Other alternatives?

Towing capacity is generally not the limiting factor whilst towing, it's payload capacity....AS's can be on the heavy side on tongue weights. The Bambi's have a GVWR of 5k I think and you are in the 10-15% range for tongue weight. Assume conservative 10% which = 500 lbs (could be up to 750...

I need to upgrade my truck to a 250/2500

Interesting, so they get around the payload capacity issue by bumping up the GVWR on the diesels....wonder if that is just a springs or there are some structural upgrades too? I have a base Tradesman 2500 w/6.4 and I am right at 3200 lbs, some of the diesel 2500's were low 2000's.....so based...

I need to upgrade my truck to a 250/2500

Are those payloads based on door stickers or online literature? There is generally a huge discrepancy between posted and actual payloads...... I did some research on some of the forums and rooted around at dealerships, it's hard to find like for like rigs, but the payload differences I saw...

I need to upgrade my truck to a 250/2500

Something else to consider between 2500 and 3500 is gas vs diesel, in some cases a lightly optioned gas 2500 is probably approaching the payload of a fully decked out diesel 3500. I've seen some Ram 2500 diesel's that were sub 2000k payload - I wanna say getting a gas gets you ~800 lbs of...

I need to upgrade my truck to a 250/2500

I think the 5500 is the same size as the 3500, it looks the same to me....but has a HUGE rear axle and crazy big springs.

I need to upgrade my truck to a 250/2500

I have a buddy who just bought a RAM 5500, he had same opinion, why mess around with a 3500!

I need to upgrade my truck to a 250/2500

I was in same boat - lots of factors, but overall I don't think you can go wrong with any brand. I chose a RAM 2500 / Hemi since it was much less than the comparable Fords I could find and I could find 0 Chevy's, partially due to supply chain issues and it's hard (at least it was when I was...

    Towing a 16ft Airstream with a 4runner? Other alternatives?

One of the big advantages of Airstreams is their resale, they are $$$ up front but don't lose nearly as much as the typically cheaper builds and actual cost of ownership is lower than most...in fact our 2019 20' Bambi we sold for $5k more than we bought it for after 3 years and 10k miles, things...

Look at the gas mileage posted in this old Ford ad!

Nothing to do with right or wrong, speed limits here in WA/OR/ID/CA (out West like I said) are generally 70-75, while practically they are 80+, going 55mph would probably get you pulled over at best, in an accident at worst. Operating vehicles outside 'normal' operating parameters gets you...

Look at the gas mileage posted in this old Ford ad!

But you are also driving outside of the generally accepted parameters, 55 mph is not realistic out west here nor is accelerating that slowly. I know some of the hypermiler dudes can get like 2x MPG ratings...

Look at the gas mileage posted in this old Ford ad!

The reality of MPG is it's simply a function of power required (based on drag, friction, etc) and engine efficiency. It's why high HP engines can get the same MPG as low HP engines if you are just cruising down the highway @ steady RPM @ steady load @ steady speed.....you need say 60 hp to do...

Look at the gas mileage posted in this old Ford ad!

Complete lies....I had a 90's ford 3 years ago, 300 ci, 5 spd manual, 2wd, std. cab, brand new stock size Geolanders, sub 100k miles total creampuff, it got 16-17mpg, what you'd expect, driving moderately, I hand calced it all (had too)...I think I saw a high of 18.xx once or twice.

    Towing a 16ft Airstream with a 4runner? Other alternatives?

I just picked up trailer - 10.7 with net elevation gain of 3500'.....I typically get ~15 unloaded on same trip. I'm guessing 11-13 on average longer trips (ish)....all via lie-o-meter.....FWIW

    Towing a 16ft Airstream with a 4runner? Other alternatives?

I had a 20' AS we towed with my 2019 Ranger - it was adequate, not great. Biggest limiting factor was fuel range (18 gallons) whilst getting sub 12 mpg and braking, we were up in the mountain on a gravel road and descending was....interesting to say the least. As others have pointed out...

    Brake Pads for Overweight Tacoma

I wouldn't be comfortable pushing limits like that, or even maxing out GVWR itself, but to each their own, not trying to give a lecture since you obviously get it but no brake upgrade is going to make it stop safely. I like the OEM stuff personally on my older Tacoma, once you start upgrading...
