Better view of front end swap.
Went through all 4 light bulbs, Low beams are LED, high beams are halogen because the budget bulbs I bought on eBay from China sent me two boxes of low beams instead of one box low, one box high. Both turn signals and marker lights are still halogen, will keep...
4BT,
Not too familiar with Silverado rear ends, but would the larger rear twin caliper discs directly bolt on or would you have to make modifications?
Yeah it does look wider and trophy truck intimidating. Still tinkering with the bumper, trying to figure out which one to go with.
vintageracer,
What you are describing is the complete opposite of my experience. Every vacuum brake I've stalled out gave me 2-3 pumps of stopping power after turning the motor off and hydroboost completely and instantly shuts off.
This is both in 00-06 2500 Silverados as well as my 2011 2500...
CampStewart,
You are funny. I have spent the last three years and over 50,000 hard off road miles blasting with my kids around the Southwest deserts. Everything I have done to my truck is to maximize speed, safety and comfort. I have run trails with built and highly modified Rubicons that can...
rayra,
Haha, most Earthlings smile and cheer when they see this behemoth run the same trails that jeeps run. Ironically I am usually narrower than some of the built Jeeps I see on the trail.
Apparently GM put this front end on Suburbans for the Mexican market, so if anyone has rented a...
rho,
You can run some 16" wheels but the clearance will be way too close for comfort. 17" rims give you much more peace of mind.
My brake upgrade write up
Hope that helps. I went with solid non slotted or cross drilled OEM spec Callahan rotors and ceramic pads. I also installed Russell speed...
nitro_rat,
Yes on the highway hydroboost is amazing but off road with 100# or bigger tires at low RPMs you do need a larger reservoir, a bigger cooler and a ram assist, and at that point it becomes too expensive to add all that unless you are racing competitively.
4BT,
Yes they are bolt on: rotor, bracket and caliper. Also which trucks were they on in 05 and 06? My buddy with a 06 Denali Yukon XL still had the smaller GMT800 brakes up front. We put Hydroboost and GMT900 front brakes on it ans it stops scary fast. Fleet pads dust a little less than semi...
Avalanche front end: Part 1
I have been driving around with canoe straps holding down my hood and busted fenders for nearly two years. Last month I found a parts 2003 Avalanche and could not resist the $200 price tag. Last week I took some of the front end off the Avalanche, this week I am...
dirtdobberoffroad,
There is enough room under the hood to stuff a reservoir even if you go with a dual battery setup. I can't wait to see what you do with the custom bumper. And speaking of bumpers, I just started my 2003 Avalanche front end transformation, write up and pictures to come soon...
non towing off road application: not really.
$200 cam and $100 tune gets your 5.3 more power and torque than a stock 6.0 and that's less than the premium you will pay for that 6.0
transmission depends on how hard you drive and same $100 tune above changes shift points and pressures to make it...
Opened up a can of worms here my friend.
Everyone that commented is correct. Some are obsessive number crunchers that have been tracking MPG wince 1979, some are wishy washy dreamers that think that a 3/4 ton frame, 6.0 and 4L80 transmission is god's gift to automotive industry.
So to answer...
I like the Ford V10, great motors, lots of power but sip a lot of gas when puling over 10,000lbs truck and trailer. Can't wait to see what you do with it. I say 40s, gears and lot of trips.
As requested: Windshield washer reservoir relocation!
This will only work if you remove the battery and relocate it to the auxiliary battery location on the passenger side of the truck.
New England winters were taking a toll on my winter driving to the point where I had to pull over and...
calicamper,
Thats funny, but so true. I have two Regalo My Cot cots for my kids, I usually put them in the truck in the spring and take them out when I put my winter ski gear in the roof box early winter. Along with two kids penguin sleeping bags they have saved us so much trouble both in hotel...
02TahoeMD,
I grew up an DC area and very familiar with rust, it's very discouraging to work on my truck out here. Antiseize has been a very good friend, been using it on bolts and just between pieces of metal that touch each other anywhere I wrench on. I do need to look into a frame coating...
calicamper,
No bunk beds, the boys are just short enough to fit on the full bed with a plastic bin dividing them. I am thinking about a bunk setup when my 8 month old gets bigger and I need space for one more kid bed.
Hard sided pop ups are awesome. If I could build an ideal one it would be a...
Rayra,
I will look into the CV axle next time I'm under the truck, I'm sure some grease leaked out from this torture. Pulling the clamp apart and re-injecting the grease is a great idea and will save me a headache down the road.
I am going to order a new caliper and caliper bracket from my...
