    pivoting frames and mounting campers

I was probably half asleep writing the question. So knowing full well that a C-channel frame is like a wet noodle, If you left on the factory bed or hard mounted a flatbed, the bed (whatever kid it is) would in some way, even if miniscule, prevent such flex, right? Just through force. Like...

    pivoting frames and mounting campers

Any plans for the body as well? I would imagine the cab is going to have just as much pressure on it from chassis flex as the factory rear bed. With a pivot flatbed, I would imagine this places even more stress on the cab from preventing the chassis from flexing. For myself I had considered...

Need help on picking a 3/4 ton

So here is another perspective for the good of the group that hasn't been discussed yet I don't think. Another thing to consider with vehicle/system choice is weights in the conditions you will operate, or most likely operate. I think, even for myself, so many people get caught up with how...

    pivoting frames and mounting campers

I have been wondering the same thing. I hear of people who have mounted via springs, and plan to do similar to keep weights and fabwork lower compared to a 3 point, but the specifics on springs and bolts to use seems to be unobtainable information.

Need help on picking a 3/4 ton

What about a 6.2 frame and axles (not sure what gen that is...11?), with a 12v engine, and a '77 extended cab. ;)

    Unimog fire truck in Montana

This is awesome, I drove by that rig a lot this summer and always thought about stopping for a closer look.

Need help on picking a 3/4 ton

My .02. A gasser has it's perks for sure, but it's lighter for a reason. I think the tradeoff of having a gasser is a higher payload, but at the cost of making the engine work a lot harder. I recently had to come to terms with just being ok being slightly over weight knowing that the parts...

Electrical & Wiring - older vehicle theory vs. modern ideas

Well this is a ton of awesome information! Thank you for sharing! :) quotes edited for space.... This is very interesting. So basically, what I understand from this is the age old theory many people have that 'if you have a powerful alternator you need a huge wire' is not...

Electrical & Wiring - older vehicle theory vs. modern ideas

So I guess the better question then is where is the resistance coming from? If you have 2 sets of batteries. One set is connected through a large 4ga wire (such as the 7.3 as is stock), and another set that is connected via a small 18ga wire, naturally the second set would have a wire meltdown...

Electrical & Wiring - older vehicle theory vs. modern ideas

So some questions for the community about electrical theory. I think I just overloaded and fried my brain with some engineering stuff for other things, or having a brain fart, but in figuring some electrical mods I seem to have confused myself. The general question regards wiring needs for...

    Expedition Vehicle selection thoughts?

Well not to hijack and end in an argument but there are some very misleading things in that article. For one it does not list factual numbers very well other than an synopsis. When assessing things like that scientific articles which explain the methods, materials, discussion, hypothesis and...

    Expedition Vehicle selection thoughts?

Ruff, well said. I was about to say something similar. Of course everyone has their own desires, and their reasons for such, which is totally fine, and in many ways good as it often pushes boundaries of new research and development, and new products, etc... But like you said I think at the...

    Destination Unknown - a 1997 F350 build

Running some numbers Seabass, I have taken your advice to heart and will be 'ignoring' the sticker while remaining within a safe spec. After all, if I did everything I wanted, it simply wouldn't work, as the weight problem alone would require a dually 550 series weight rated truck, with the...

    Destination Unknown - a 1997 F350 build

EDIT: hit enter too soon.... Hope you all had a great Christmas and are planning for some adventurous New Year's trips! I have been quite busy with fixing some things and of course more research! Here's an update of what has transpired since towing back 'home' and finishing a few things...

    Expedition Vehicle selection thoughts?

Interesting convos and suggestions seen here. Zybane, have you come close to a decision? Like many have said eventually you have to just pull the trigger and see where it takes you. As I have done with deciding to do a modified camper with custom bed for storage. Realizing it is absolutely...

New Alaskan side entry flatbed 8.5' build!!

What about using an inflatable mattress (a high quality one, not a $10 one from Walmart) instead? Some breather space could be made under it with some plywood and strips. It would probably be just as comfortable without the chance of absorbing water and getting moldy? The one downside I...

Buy new F350 or restore older 7.3?

I think I'll chime in with some cents of thoughts. I like what tantaka48 said above. There are certainly some advantages to both routes. Personally, I would never get a newer truck than a 97 7.3 (at least right now). Here is the reasons why. As most have already said before, it's...
