    Packing a family a 4 into a jeep or 4runner

LOL say the guys with a bandsaw, drill press, tubing bender, multiple dies, 2 welders, torch, plasma, 6-7 grinders, 50+ clamps (you can never have enough clamps) and all the little bits it takes to live a fabrication hobby… Built not bought… but at least it’s custom! I got to decide where the...

This solves all of your weight, subframe, and loading / unloading problems. It also leaves your truck open to haul other gear.

Talk me out of it: 6.0L Powerstroke?

I owned a 2005 6.0 F250 for about 12 years and 120k of its roughly 145k miles. Bought as a lemon law buyback from a dealership in 2008 for $22k. It was a wonderful and surprisingly annoying truck. All of my old Chevys over many years were always crap, always running partially impaired, but...

I’ve lived in 3 US states and probably worked in 30 or so. I have never seen a pickup truck weighed by any enforcement office, but… In California removing the pickup box and changing to a flatbed usually triggers the transition to “commercial”. I have seen flatbed pickups stopped, weighed, and...

    Chassis Design

It all depends on the size, thickness, loading. There is no easy black and white answer. The number, size, location of the cross members will determine how twist resistant the trailer is. At that point, I’m getting too far over my skis to give you an answer without reviewing a heck of a lot...

Ideas for cargo in back of Jeep- adding slides for boxes and fridge?

For some reason the “slid out” pic doesn’t want to post, but there is all the horrible glory of how it sits this AM.

Once daylight happens. Everything from making that was a few phones ago.

Ideas for cargo in back of Jeep- adding slides for boxes and fridge?

I made a single full-width slide out of tube and expanded metal. I love it. A folding table slips under, along with some other gear, and a shelf sits over the fridge for upper storage. Jerry cans, bags, chuck box whatever can sit next to fridge.

Have you checked the resistance of the glow plug? Have you pulled the glow plug out and tried to run it to see if the glow plug is getting hot and it fuel is coming from the chamber? Have you unplugged the glow plug and checked voltage to see if the glow plug circuit is getting power? This is...

You would be well off to just go drive your truck across a scale with an empty flat bed, full tanks, all your recovery gear, etc… Subtract that number from 7k and see what is left for camper and gear. I’m definitely not a GVWR Nazi, I believe that you can run safely and carefully if you are...

Do your brakes fully lock up?

Make sure the battery in the trailer for the e-brake is in good condition and fully charged. They are usually pretty low quality batteries and fail frequently… it it can’t push (guessing here … 12-16 amps sustained) you won’t get max brake force. This should be independent from the brake...

Do your brakes fully lock up?

You “Should” be able to lock them up on an empty trailer. I know that when I run my little trailer empty I have to run the gain at lowest setting or it will throw little clouds of smoke behind me as it gets excited about stopping. With full load I have to run gain at about the mid-range and it...

    Chassis Design

With or without corrosion? The chassis life is all about loading and twisting assumptions and a whole lot of beam bending calculations. It is probably fair to say that the Aluminum one is likely lighter, more expensive, less likely to corrode, easier to clean, and harder to field repair than...

Agreed that you will be well over GVWR for a 1/2 ton truck. The shelter alone probably consumes most or all of it. You can make your own decisions about weight by reading a lot of threads on here.

Has anybody seen this popup mechanism before?

I’m a little confused by what you mean when you say push to the sides. Do you have an interior picture popped up?

When I was thinking of heating water tanks, I was thinking “to keep them from freezing”… but that probably wasn’t clear. The location of your water storage and whether or not it takes livable space probably depends on insulation and / or heat. Your heat source should probably take that into...

Broken Baroud Tent Latch Bolt Replacment

Given that machine screws are bagged and sold for about $1 at big box retailers and even less individually at hardware stores, why not buy a couple of each size? My guess would be that is an 8 or 10.

All the “Jack pocket” needs to be is a standard trailer hitch receiver with enough clearance to reach under and place the pin…. All of the “stick out” part can be built onto the Jack, which can be stowed when not in use. Thus the subframe would or could be the same width as your truck bed. I’m...

Resources for complete beginners? S-250 build-out

Better than brackets for jacks might be a sub-frame with pockets that jacks could be placed into. The jacks could then be removable and stored in slots in the sub-frame. Wood heat might make sense depending on where you are and where you plan to go. However, it is relatively dirty, consumes a...
