Chevrolet Express Van - AWD to 4x4 conversion

Thanks for this info Herbie! If Chevy holds true to many things being similar between models, I hope there are similarities to the Astro/S10 PCM and the Express PCM. According to Chiltons, my PCM is located in the driver-side engine bay, behind the washer fluid reservoir.

    Nice rack!

What is everyone's prefered rack for a full-size van? I can purchase Thule products at a discount but most of the racks I see pictured on expedition/offroad vehicles are something other than Thule/Yakima. I'm just putting a list together at this point but I would like it to carry a few things...

Chevrolet Express Van - AWD to 4x4 conversion

That may buy me a little bit of speed. I'll have some time tonight to look into Herbie's idea about the PCM and the same issue with the Astros. The friend that helped me said that Chevy/GM is famous for reusing the same technology across different models and years. I'm assuming a GM "PCM"...

    Lights and lighing?

No one else can comment on the lights they are running? Lightforce get great reviews but they start to get spendy at $250/set (w/ wiring harness, fog filter). I see lots of PIAA out there but they don't get gleaming reviews.

Chevrolet Express Van - AWD to 4x4 conversion

Like Herbie said, the #1 advantage is the low range. I do not have plans to take this van places that many here go but having 4LO will be extra insurance. I will also be pulling a boat in the next year or 2 and being able to lock into 4WD is nice when on slippery boat ramps. I gathered a...

Glove box for GM full-size vans?

Awesome find! I just learned the other day that is refered as a "console" and just had not looked yet. I just ordered one of those up! Thanks for the help!

Bull bar is also on the list but as you know, there is nothing off-the-shelf available. I'll be interested to see what you come up with.

Chevrolet Express Van - AWD to 4x4 conversion

Hey dwalt - Good to see you post! How has your bumper held up to winter driving or do you not see much snow/salt? I have ideas for a front 2" receiver mount that kind of plays off your design. I like the idea of having a winch mounted on a plate to connect to a 2" receiver front or rear to...

Chevrolet Express Van - AWD to 4x4 conversion

I was using Autotrader and Craigslist to search for these vans. There were only 20 listed for entire country when I found mine 30 min. away. Mine has the G80 locking diff as well!

New project: The White Buffalo (Chevy Express AWD)

Everything I think about putting in the van gets a weight consideration and if there is a way to make it lighter! I'm trying to learn more about the H-chassis (AWD) that these vans are built on since it is different than the G-chassis (2WD). We installed a Hidden Hitch as well last week and it...

Chevrolet Express Van - AWD to 4x4 conversion

AWD isn't available in the vans Quigley typically converts (2500, 3500) so they do put in a bit of engineering in their product, but I know what you are saying. I'm guessing they swap most of the front end of a 2500/3500 4x4 Chevy truck underneath it since they state it has an axle disconnect...

Chevrolet Express Van - AWD to 4x4 conversion

I'm certainly not an expert so don't quote me but I believe they began offering the AWD in 2003 for the Express van. There are a few people on this board with them but they seem to be rare. Yeah, a diesel with manual tranny swap would be nice! I have lots of ideas for the shifting floating...

Chevrolet Express Van - AWD to 4x4 conversion

(I will be updating this initial post with more/better detail as time allows and will try to honor picture requests. This may be disappointing to some but this is mostly a post-mortem account of the work performed rather than a step-by-step. The project was performed in a barn in MI in late...

Camper van kitchen galley - alcohol stoves?

This is the way I'm definitely leaning. I need to look into the inductive cooktops closer. The LI Baja Burner is interesting but I don't like that you are reliant on the fuel canisters. I've camped with people before where finding replacements became an issue when they didn't pack enough...

New project: The White Buffalo (Chevy Express AWD)

Just passing through with an update... I was busy over the week of Thanksgiving. I was home to go hunting and I made the leap to convert the AWD Express van to 4WD. I'll post more later with some pics but here is an overview: AWD transfer case removed and replaced with a 1990-1994 NP241...

That table pictured is from Little Guy Trailers (makers of teardrop trailers). Thule may have something similar.

Camper van kitchen galley - alcohol stoves?

Does anyone here use an alcohol or alcohol/electric stove in their rig? I'm laying out plans for some sort of kitchen/storage unit; something I could take in/out when it was needed. I'll want this unit to be mostly self-contained so there is no plumbing or auxillary tanks anywhere. Most RV...

    Herbie's Chevy Astrolander/ZMB Build Thread

Is that the OEM dome/map light for your van? The dome light in my Express is as basic as it gets that I have to turn on/off with the dash dimmer switch and would like to retro-fit something a bit nicer. Thanks!
