    Solar In The Desert

Have been replacing my Odysseys every three years like clockwork, looking to try something different. Victron makes some marine deep cycles that should fit, but there are none in North America right now. Six weeks out, unless a distributor can find some. Looks like similar situation for their...

Full River batteries are not the deal that I had been led to believe they would be. MAP pricing killed most of my discount and I have to pay $45 for the privilege of picking them up at will-call. Brings them close to the price of Northstars and Odysseys. I won't need them for another couple...

One advantage of an intelligent relay, over a key controlled relay, is that it takes care of maintaining your starter batter automatically, so you don't need any additional toys...Don't spend money on stuff you don't need. As I read the doco on Trick-L, Amp-L, and Echo, they all seem to have...

    Solar In The Desert

Heard about these from an RV solar installer in Yuma over the weekend. Trick-L-Start and Amp-L-Start. RV guy says it pretty much eliminates the need to charge both battery banks from solar because these units will pass up to 5 amps or 15 amps, depending on the model, whenever the house...

Thanks for the feedback on the Full Rivers. I am about 20 miles from their distribution center so can pick up at will call and save shipping. Online dealer told me that warranty claims are a lot simpler than with Lifeline, just call dealer, go thru diagnosis and if battery legitimately failed...

Anyone use Full River AGM deep cycles? Found them today while poking around. Designed in US, manufactured offshore (China?). Capacities about same as Lifelines, longer warranty, about 2/3 the cost of Lifelines.

Because that's a Starter batt size, not for deep cycling, why was it selected? Went with 34s ten years ago because that was what would easily fit the available space under the truck. Needed to clear skid plates and still be able to tuck batteries up as high as possible to clear trail...

I called Redarc today, but their North Carolina number rings into central Australia. May not be a good sign for inventory in North America, or for tech support calls down the road. Left a message but don't expect a return call until next week. Have not been able to find any decent capacity...

Why do you want to be in that kind of heat again? I must be dumber than I look, but I'm not alone. We have eleven guys going on the next trip, end of August/Labor Day weekend.

    Solar In The Desert

Just got off the phone with Morningstar tech and the Sunsaver Duo shuts down at 113F controller temp, regardless of battery temp. So, in the cab on a hot day with the A/C running, the solar will work but will will shut down sometime after the truck is parked. Looks like the search continues...

    Solar In The Desert

Received confirmation from Ctek that the D250SA will not interfere with the alternator charging the starter battery at full amperage. I looked at the Redarc site last night and will call them later, but their unit is physically pretty large so need to figure out where to mount it. Looking...

    Solar In The Desert

Here is the wiring diagram that Ctek sent me, reflecting my proposed setup. If I read this correctly, it looks like the D250SA will allow full charging from the alternator to the starting battery at up to 14.6V per the ECU (direct cable from alt to battery), but will send a max of 20 amps at...

    Solar In The Desert

Here is one of the answers from Ctek re the D250SA, not good news: I have answers to a few of your questions. Your 280A alternator will not damage the D250SA however the ambient temperature is going to be an issue. The charger will shut down in temps that exceed 122 F. If it shuts down at...

    Solar In The Desert

Looks like I need to call Ctek again. If the D250SA chokes the alternator output down to 20 amps, I can't use it. May not have space for the Smart Pass and see no good reason to spend the extra money just to get 80 amps out of my 270 amp alternator.

If you are getting performance like that, then you should probably go with a relay based system as a B2B isn't going to do anything but get you a slower charge. The D250SA is only going to get you a maximum of 20A; I suspect that your alternator will get you at least 100A, if your batteries need...

    Solar In The Desert

Alternator generally settles in at 13.6-13.9 at cruising speeds after truck has been on the road a while. At startup this morning, it touched 14.6 then quickly settled at 14.4 at idle. All three batteries are at low OCV.

    Solar In The Desert

operating a battery in high temps requires temperature compensation. This means a remote temp sensor at the battery. Without temp compensation, the batteries life will be dramatically reduced. My starting battery has a factory temp sensor built into the base of the battery box, and that...

Not to discount your experience, but weather averages for Gila Bend are as follows. Month High/Low June 106° / 71° July 109° / 80° August 107° / 79° September 103° / 72° Not to discount your averages, but this was Aztec on 8/31/15, mid-afternoon, dirt roads at 30mph, headed from Dateland...

    Tire repair kit?

I also echo the "short term" comment as bogus. Echo all you want, but just because a plug holds does not mean it is ideal. A proper patch will be vulcanized from the inside of the tire. Some duct tape and tie wire will hold a radiator hose together for a long time, but it's not an ideal repair.

    Second Battery Gremlins

"Starting battery 12.3v GOOD House battery 12.6v GOOD " I'm not sure either of those is good. I think one of OP's batteries is an Optima, and full charge on those is either 13.1V or 13.2V, depending on whether it is a Starting battery (Red chemistry) or a dual purpose (Yellow chemistry). Both...
