Proposed 1k fine for vehicles over 20 years old in Oregon

California wants to add a $100 per year fee on ALL vehicles. That one is in the works now. The governor is also pimping a $60 annual increase in registration fees. All this is on top of outrageously high tag renewal fees. I think the last renewal on my 12-year old Dodge 3/4 ton was $385. No...

Advice on sealing up truck canopy - weatherseal prep and carpet question

I have factory bulb seals on three trucks, all with SnugTop shells. Trucks are Dodge, GMC, Toyota, all with plastic bed rail caps. Oldest shell is almost 20 years, mid is 12 years, newest has been on the truck for two years, but both truck and shell were bought used from different sources...

    Truck Topper Brace

Unless you just need a winter project, consider getting a lumber rack that mounts to the box rails and comes up outside the shell. Mount the RTT to the rack and forget about building a structure inside the shell. Makes the shell a lot more usable. Lumber racks are designed to handle lots of...

Who makes these for the DuraCell label? Deka/East Penn?

Duracell !2v Grp 31 AMG back at Sams Club...$179

I am not a Sam's Club member, but I recently needed some degreaser that is private labeled for them. It's $6.50/gal at SC and about $23/gal through Walmart or Amazon. Turns out that SC will let you order things on their website with a 24-hour guest pass and you just pay a 10% premium. Worked...

Anybody have some inexpensive tricks for dealing wtih desert pinstriping and gouges?

Needs more than a wet sand. If OP is really planning to repaint the doors later, the quickest fix is going to be a black magic marker to make the stripes black again. Then just live with it until the repaint. Those stripes can be fixed, but it looks like it's down to the primer or bare metal...

Battery operated impact driver vs. pneumatic

It's enough for short bursts with most pneumatics. I have OBA on my truck, but I generally use cordless impacts because they are just more convenient, as long as you have batteries. I have a couple of the older Dewalt 18V 1/2" impacts and they claim 300 lb/ft. I also have a smaller Dewalt...

    Yeti Lawsuit

Same business model as UnderArmour and dozens of others. Get to market early with something slightly different, hype the hell out of it to create buzz, then charge a premium because it is "special." Lots of lower cost alternatives to UnderArmour that work just as well (5.11, Champion, etc.)...

    RTIC Coolers

I have two Orca 58s that I have had for about three years. They are NOT knockoffs of the Yeti, because they are a completely different form factor, with different features. I bought the Orcas for three reasons: 1. The Orcas always finished at or near the top in every cooler comparison I could...

New to Overlanding...Will This Truck Be a Suitable Platform?

That seems like a ridiculously high price. Look around and you can do better, especially if you can find a used one or a customer return. My first SnugTop was a customer return, dealer wanted it gone, price was about 60% of brand new. I needed a shell for a second gen Tundra a couple of years...

    Which off-road vehicle?

I own all three concurrently, so I can do A-B-C comparisons any time I want. The solid axle Dodge is better on any surface other than a twisty asphalt road in the mountains. The Tundra handles like a Camry with tired shocks, but it's fast. The GMC falls in the middle, but is best in the twisties.

    Ryobi Gen Sine Wave Test

To OP, unless you already have the Ryobi unit, think about the current model Yamaha units with pure sine wave output. I bought a pair of the previous model Yamahas (without the "v2" suffix) and they seem to be the best small units out there. I looked at several others, including Honda and...

ARB single compressor (CKMA12) for airing up 32" tires and lockers?

Yes, if you are not in a hurry. I used to use a smallish Viair portable to air up 35s and it was fine. My last compressor purchase was an ARB single for 33s on a different truck.

    Which off-road vehicle?

IFS vs solid axle depends on the vehicle. GM IFS 1/2 ton axles have notoriously weak diffs and shafts, so are not very good candidates for front lockers, but are good candidates for axle swaps. My Dodge with solid axles is just as comfortable on the road as my IFS GMC and Tundra, but way more...

    BEWARE OF RTIC COOLERS

At least one big retail hunting/fishing store that I visit occasionally has switched from selling Yeti to some other brand, Bison I think. Before I bought my Orcas, the staff at that store was solidly Yeti and according to them nothing else would do. They may have switched because of customer...

    50 degree ambient drop?

I lived with regular coolers for years, and they won't do that. I have rotomolded coolers, and they won't do that. We were out for five days on that trip, with maybe two hours of driving each day. Temps dropped from 128F to around 115F. Nights felt like they were in the low 90's. Stuff that...

    BEWARE OF RTIC COOLERS

The Yeti/RTIC settlement seems to be based upon look and feel considerations. There is nothing magical or revolutionary about rotomolded coolers with decent insulation and features. Change a few product details and the issues go away. See Pelican, Orca, Bison, Canyon, Ozark Trail, etc. They...

    50 degree ambient drop?

My Indel B 50-ish has held -21C/-6F in ambient temps as high as 128F (around Dateland AZ, 8/31/15). Fridge was full, truck had been driven for about 6 hours before we got there. Ice cream still hard the next morning (and afternoon). Your expectations are not unreasonable.

    BatteryMinder - Solar

The Odyssey does not seem to notice it, but I wanted something that I could hard mount and direct wire and just leave on 24/7/365. Solargizer had a panel that was a nice fit on the cowl, no interference with wipers or vents, completely innocuous to the casual observer. It was about $100, but...

    BatteryMinder - Solar

Careful calculations indicated that it would be enough to offset most of the parasitic drain during most of the year (sunny So Cal climate). Two-watt panel was the biggest I could fit on the cowl without modifying something. Manufacturer claims that it also desulfates. A friend has the same...
