Unimogadventures - Our build and travel thread

The only thing I cut away was where the original "sunroof" was, I kept the surrounding frame - I would not be replacing that unless you have a lot of fabrication experience, it is a pretty complicated double skin affair . I replaced the bit of reinforcing that went across the roof with the...

Unimogadventures - Our build and travel thread

I had the engine running for about half and hour today, got it up to operating temperature, and it behaved itself, keeping all the oil and water on the inside. I have fitted silcon hoses throughout the cooling system, the only ones that are not are the upper and lower main radiator hoses, the...

Unimogadventures - Our build and travel thread

Who knows Pairoa, but there are other cars I think I might have a go a building first, this mog has to last at least 15 years for us :)

Unimogadventures - Our build and travel thread

Major milestone today, I've started the new engine . :) For the first time in over 6 years the engine in my mog is running. Now I need to put on all the extra stuff I took off to replace the motor, fit the new front axle and then I should be on the road.

No, we used a thinner marine carpet, the ones on the rear wall of the cab is a lot thicker, and not as flexible. We will use this carpet to line the drawers in the camper as well.

Unimogadventures - Our build and travel thread

Quick update, the dash is now finished, glove box all installed and We fully carpeted the glove box inside, and added a dual USB charger as well. There are also two USB connection to the sound system. I had to make a new striker plate for the glove box lock, so that it would work...

Just a quick update to show I am actually working on the truck. This is the rear end, with all the lights fitted. I just need to add a couple of cover plates on the outer edges, and tidy up the wiring behind the number plate / rear storage tube cover. and i have also finished the wiring...

    One Spare Tire or Two?

Most likely they ran it under-inflated or and it over heated and burst. I suspect they had a slow puncture, and did not notice the starting to pull to one way as it happens over time. The bead locks would have kept the tyre on the rim until it destroyed itself. They should have tyre monitors...

ALU skin on galvanized STEEL frame?

I am not sure of the shape of what you are trying to cover, but you would just have to be careful anywhere water can pool - that will create the electrolytic contact needed for corrosion. Do 3M recommend any protection of the steel - The Sikaflex people said I had to paint my steel and use...

    One Spare Tire or Two?

One spare, and the tools and equipment to patch / plug and repair. I've driven solo more than 100,000km in very remote areas, and only ever had one spare. I've patched plugged plenty tyres, patched a few and even sewn a sidewall together. One only needs to drive in Africa to realise how some...

ALU skin on galvanized STEEL frame?

The main problem with using 3M VHB tape or similar, is that you cannot re-align a panel - and working with a large sheet and getting it aligned properly first time is not easy, and almost impossible to do by yourself, you will need an assistance. Using Sikaflex, you can re-align the panel quite...

ALU skin on galvanized STEEL frame?

My camper is aluminium skin on a steel frame. I used 2mm aluminium, which is pretty strong, and whilst if may dent, a field repair is very easy and it won't crack like FPR, which would very difficult to repair in the field, or even the workshop properly. I had two main reasons for not...

    Vortex Generators

I was already planning on adding vortex generators to the back of my truck ( the main reason for the chamfer rear) to reduce dust potential on the rear window, but looks like there are some commercial things called Air-tabs, might just get these instead. They seem to do a great job. Anyone had...
