Unimogadventures - Our build and travel thread

That sounds good, but I would need a bigger screen. Once I get the camera mounted, I should have pretty clear view all around, hopefully no blind spots. I am on the third pack of dynamat ( one dynamat, and two "copies") but I went overboard - two layers on the floor and firewall, the whole...

Unimogadventures - Our build and travel thread

Thanks, can't wait to get it covered in the vinyl, just have to be patient and make sure everything is fitted and working before I send it off. Thanks, there have been some very frustrating times when my ability did not match my imagination. Things are coming together now, and I'm back into...

Unimogadventures - Our build and travel thread

Hi Dan, I went with a Steel frame and aluminum to satisfy the local regulations. Over here if we want to have the two seats in the rear registered for passenger use, then the rear has to be "substantial". Discussing things with the engineers who have to certify the design, there is a set of...

Unimogadventures - Our build and travel thread

I finally got the laser cut steel and aluminium inserts. The inserts are currently sitting under a couple of sheets of MDF and about 200kg of weight, as they are getting the wood veneer glued on. Laser cutting is by far the best way to get very accurate plates cut up, the whole lot cost $70...

Not sure If I need cooling fans, I will see how hot they run when I finally finish the cab - I don't think I will be running them as loud as I did when testing, it was very loud :) It would be easy to rig up a fans, or I could bolt them to a heatsink. I used to have the amps and sub in my...

Unimogadventures - Our build and travel thread

The bed frame is a standard U1700 frame, which I cut down to fit the U1250 chassis. I had to take about 500mm out of the main tubes, and then make the supports 100mm narrower. It looks a lot lower because of the extensions I put on the side.

Still working on the cab now, fitting the panel on the rear of the cab. There are loads of wires, and the air con lines as well. The board is sealed with marine varnish after a lot of wiring, the speakers and the amplifiers are all fitted. Then I took it all apart again and covered it...

    Another Solar question

My brackets are all glued on with Sika252. The protection bars are also stuck on, based on the area of each support, the aluminium would tear before the glue came unstuck. The only holes I was planning was in the frame of the solar panels, to help with ventilation under the panels. Taking...

Should I paint my Ormocar GRP cabin?

Pierre, have you considered a vinyl wrap, possibly cheaper than a re-spray and you can add graphics etc easier. The vinyl is pretty tough and would protect the gel coat and maybe even help seal it up a bit better. I was thinking of getting mine wrapped before traveling outback, and probably...

    Another Solar question

I have 4x85W rigid panels on the roof at an angle, and another 85W and a big 300W panel mounted on the roof flat, but it can be taken off and put in the sun so we can park in the shade. I took a lot of time sorting out the protection bars for the fixed panels, so that they don't form any...

Thanks, I had a visitor to the workshop the other day, and commented that I'm not building a camper, but more like a hotrod.

A quick progress update, just to prove I am still working on the truck. The main work has been wiring, so not many exciting photos, but I took a break and Trish helped my make the rear wall panel. We made it out of 1.8mm ply, which is pretty flimsy So I reinforced it with a layer of...

Unimogadventures - Our build and travel thread

Thanks, truck is close to getting finished, some wiring, some interior work and then the final tidy up for registration. Now my excuse is trying to find time to get things done, I started a new contract that was supposed to be pretty simple and only 4 days a week. Turns out the project is a...

Cabinet Materials and hardware et al for offroad camper

My experience with building my own is decide which drawers will carry the weight, in my land rover I have a steel drawer system, made from 1mm sheet metal and covered in marine carpet. They have survived 40,000km of corrugations. The drawer runner are rated at 120kg, and I have about that in...

    Seitz Heki 2 rooflights flawed

I had three goes at finding a roof hatch, first was the Mini Heki ( 400x400) - and I thought it was too plasticky, it did not seal properly, and the fittings were very lightweight, almost guaranteed to break. The next was the Fiamma - they cracked when I dropped them from a table, the...

Are Earth Cruisers & Co. overpriced?

No offense taken, LOL. The time taken depends a lot on whether you do it full time or part time, and whether you do it all yourself or get other people to build most of the parts and you just assemble it. I think I have spent way too much time planning, so much so that I often change my...

Are Earth Cruisers & Co. overpriced?

I likewise have spent almost five years building my Unimog, and whilst I am not quite up at the same price as a finished ATW or Earthcruiser, the costs sure add up. I decide to set up accounts with wholesalers right in the beginning to get decent prices for things - well at least not full...

At last, the final bits of trim has started arriving. It was not everything that was promised, but it is pretty good start, and the quality is excellent. All going well, I will get the door panel, the shower grate and the final bits of missing trim next weekend. This is the rest of the...
