Official Test Results: Five Ways to Heat a Tent

Having finished my work on the Propex system and abandoning the project of burning anthracite coal in the wood stove, I'm trying to figure out my next winter camping project. My latest idea is to do a backpacking trek with my tree tent to see whether I can figure out how to stay warm while...

How much does your expo Jeep weigh?

Some good discussion of GAWR, sway bars and several other topics here: Is My Jeep Too Heavy? I learned a lot! There's even a post from an AEV rep in the thread. They just released a new high-capacity suspension system.

    Storage Boxes For Your Jeep

I'm working with some storage boxes in a few different configurations, including cargo systems for the roof and JKU cargo area: https://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/new-jku-cargo-system-for-2018.192238/ Not sure if this is exactly what you are looking for, but I figured I'd post a...

Official Test Results: Five Ways to Heat a Tent

Even with the base of the stove coated with an inch of sand, a cast iron grate from a coal stove, and a lining of fire bricks? So far, I've only achieved the glowing-red stove by burning wood with the air grate full open. Without a fan, I can't get the stove anywhere close to the same...

Barn Door for JK factory hardtops

Donny - I like your Blue Ridge tool bag! Jeff - is the utensil pocket you installed in the Outback Adventures tailgate table available for sale yet? Is that one of the products you are helping to design with the start-up company you have mentioned? Or is that a product that Donny already has...

Official Test Results: Five Ways to Heat a Tent

Hey everybody - I just had an idea for a modification to my Eldfell stove and wanted to get some opinions on whether I should try it. As posted above, my experiments with anthracite coal were a failure. I suspect it is because the stove doesn't draw enough airflow to keep the coal burning for...

Official Test Results: Five Ways to Heat a Tent

Yep - I forgot to mention how cheap anthracite is. I live near Boston and could get a huge 50 pound bag for just $10 at a supply depot. Cheaper than firewood!

Official Test Results: Five Ways to Heat a Tent

Thanks for the input! I am becoming convinced that you are correct. Here's what I've learned so far. 1) Anthracite coal is a beautiful thing. Smokeless, burns hot, burns long. And looks really cool, like red-orange glowing glass. 2) Anthracite coal is very difficult to get lit. I was able...

For some reason, the "share link" button on Amazon products quit working for me last week. Haven't figured out why. But here's a screenshot:

Official Test Results: Five Ways to Heat a Tent

I've spent a couple weekends trying to come up with a method for burning anthracite coal in a wood stove for my tipi tent. Anyone out there have experience with this? Anthracite burns hot and long, but my early tests indicate it requires a lot of airflow from below. Here is a photo of the...

Tembo Tusk Scottle Recipes, Tips and Tricks

Not sure why I hadn’t thought of it before (and I apologize if someone mentioned it previously in this thread), but paella must be an amazing recipe for the skottle. OutdoorX4 just published a great recipe for paella in their latest issue. With a sangria cocktail recipe as a bonus!

Official Test Results: Five Ways to Heat a Tent

I wanted to post a quick edit to one of the designs I added to this thread. In the field this week, I realized that I needed to reverse the mount for the 12v fan so that it is further away from the heat generated by the Mr Heater unit. Photos below.

Barn Door for JK factory hardtops

I think the Ursa Minor is the PERFECT combination with the barn door that Jeff designed. I can't understand why Ursa Minor wouldn't want to offer the option as a bundle - clearly their customers are willing to pay for premium quality and innovative functionality. Maybe Donny's rig will change...

New JKU Cargo System and Other Upgrades

Just found an old photo that shows how flush the base of the tent is to my platform rack. Forgot I had taken a photo from this angle. Roof top tents are tall enough, so I didn't want any extra inches between the tent and the roof of my Jeep.

Official Test Results: Five Ways to Heat a Tent

My AEV Bilstein shocks looked terrible after just one year, so I called AEV. They said "We all use Sharkhide. You'll need to buy another brand new set of Bilsteins, coat them with Sharkhide and THEN install them." I talked to the owner of Sharkhide, who is confused as to why AEV keeps it such...

JKU suspension upgrade needed - Opinions Welcome

Thread: Is my Jeep too heavy? Quote from Chris Holt at AEV in that thread: "Just a heads up, with SEMA behind us, we displayed a new DualSport HC Suspension System that will be coming out in a couple months. This will include higher capacity springs built and tuned specifically with the...

    Side-mount Jerry can holders

I am jealous of that convenient Rotopax mount! Like you, I use my MORryde bracket as my CB antenna mounting point, so I decided to install big 3/8" rivnuts that let me remove the bracket shelf and still have my CB antenna mounted. Most of the time, I'm using my CB for off-road trail runs. On...

    Side-mount Jerry can holders

See below: I bought disc magnets that were made with a center hole so I could bolt them to the pump feet. I also cut a disc out of thin rubber and layered it below the magnets, in case I wanted to snap the pump onto the body of the Jeep (or any other surface that I didn't want to scratch).
