Van rental for Pacific Coast Highway trip

West Coast winter storms trickle in off and on from about Nov to end of Dec. Our heavy weather doesnt really roll in till mid to late Dec. Jan -March typically is the heavy storm period, high winds along the coast From SF to Vancouver. The big thing to watch for are trees coming down in camp...

    Insufficient Solar Setup?! Input Appreciated

Also consider Solar generation can drop by 50% or more as we go into the winter months. Here at my house in Central CA by the 2nd week of Nov I see nearly half the solar gen that I see in July.

    Flooring material choices for conversion

There is a marine product I spotted on a custom million dollar 52 ft racing boat that was interesting. Teak looking but engineered synthetic, nice feel on the feet, no wood negatives like finishing it etc. cant recall what it was called but I have thought it would be s great material for RVs or...

    Africa Twin reviews

Any good feed back on the AT version? Yet? I like the old clutch riding but after 65,000 miles of commuter riding on the CVT silverwing which left me with no complaints, the Auto African Twin is intriging.

    Insufficient Solar Setup?! Input Appreciated

The controller may be dropping to float charge too early? Just thinking. Be sure to check with a hand held meter. There could easily be power drains that bring down the displayed voltage. My batteries will often show 13v right after being disconnected from the charge source and taper off to a...

    Promaster / Transit

The FWD in the Promaster and Fiat umm er “quality” would drop it off my list real quick. Especially if its going to be your home and only set of wheels. Ford is no wonder to perfect vehicles but they use proven running gear and their stuff the last few yrs has been good. Im impressed with our...

Popup/tent trailer vs Two RTT (roof top tents)

^ rlynch nailed the warning on the popup tent trailer. Thats my biggest complaint about mine. But mine doubles as a utility trailer and toy hauler. I really like that multi use aspect. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=QCO6asCkn7M The VMI Alpine with a large rear door so I could wheel a bike in...

    Camping vs Emergency equipment

The folks who had rv like accomidations had them stored in unaffected areas storage lots, repair facility etc, and could go get them after the initial get out event. Also the winds blew down trees and power lines which trapped people trying to drive out as things around them went up in flames.

    Camping vs Emergency equipment

I can give some feed back. First off the night of disaster was a GTFO grab bag and run as fast as you can in a couple of areas. This was primarily due to the 50-70mph winds that blew the wild fire through several neighborhoods like a giant flame thrower. My 95 yr old grandmother who is all...

Leaky 2003 1st Gen 17" Tundra / Sequoia alloy rim

I found an Ebay wheel recycler to be pretty good source for random wheels. My wife destroyed a wheel on her 2016 Fusion two months after we bought the car. Ford wanted $700! Ebay guy wanted $200. He was fast and the wheel was prestine. Id go that route again my self. My sequoia wheels were cheap.

    Van camping in -40

The small wall mount marine stoves dont take up much space and I think the wood burners do fine with pellets. But do more research to confirm. Its not hard to hide a chimney behind a roof rack. Given the temps your talking about I think your crazy - not to have a 100% reliable wood burner. The...

Subaru owners: Let's see your expedition rigs!

I use a hitchgate on my truck. I tried it on the Subaru and lost far too much precious load capacity. Its a heavy piece of kit great kit but heavy. And with our kids+ gear and our 4x6 trailer 900lbs empty and max 1200lbs packed mode every bit of Subaru load capacity matters. Solo or very...

Using load output on solar charger

I have my set up using the the load side of the solar charger. All of these units more or less were designed as power manager units for a enclosed off grid lighting system. The load side pulls from the battery. As long as the draw is below the max rating and the battery voltage doesnt drop below...

Popup/tent trailer vs Two RTT (roof top tents)

Have you seen the vmi trailers? Kinda a combo hard side pop top. Fast setup, yet lower profile than the full hard side RV trailer. The tent trailers are not quick setup / tear down rigs they suck for the one night stops. Thats what I hate about ours. But for 2+ day base camp setup the tent...
