Couldn't afford a Taco, so I got a Dako: 1st Gen Dakota Budget Build

Very nice! I always had a soft spot for Dakotas. Cool user name too!

For those that carry Guns and Overlanding

Good thread Even though I am a proponent of the 2A (NRA member for 25+ years), I still find other opinions interesting. Regarding the backcountry, if in my Jeep, I keep a GP100 in a lock box. If hiking/back-packing, I generally don't carry a firearm. For me, it is an equation of risk and...

    9MM Pistol for bear protection?

This requires some citation for reference: https://thefederalist.com/2018/07/24/liberal-ninth-circuit-says-open-carrying-gun-constitutional-right/ But yeah, the 9th Circuit judgement will likely not carry much weight if one chooses to open carry in say Chicago. Even worse, this 9th Circuit...

    Grand Canyon, South to North

Thanks for the trip report and fantastic pictures! I am planning a trip to Tuweep in October. So, I read your report with great interest!

    Land anchor

You sold me. I have been debating a PulPal for 2 years now (no exaggeration), but the cost and bulk/weight always put me off. I like this solution. I will take the potential time and labor penalty of digging over the cons of the PulPal as this is essentially an insurance option. That is, I...

    Hypothetical Recovery Question

Came across a group of vehicles, where one guy flipped his newer Chevy 1500. The driver was out and walking about. It became quickly apparent that alcohol and speeding/racing were factors. We just as quickly made the decision to move on our way. I would have been more than happy to help if...

    Tire repair kit?

On the basis of this thread, I went ahead and ordered the Outback Expedition kit as replacement/upgrade for my now ageing ARB kit. The kit arrived yesterday, and I am impressed with the quality of the contents. It is a small thing but even the molle compatible pack is a nice touch and upgrade...

    MaxTrax, are they worth it?

None. IIRC, they are not to be used for bridging.

    Tire repair kit?

I just want to express my thanks to all for a very informative thread. Probably the best I have read on this subject.

    Jeep J8 USA Buying Options?

A J8 alternative, but similarly unobtainable, is the AIL Storm, or Sufa III. I guess that doesn't help the OP, but may increase the overall body of knowledge of Jeep-type vehicles on the international market :) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AIL_Storm

    MaxTrax, are they worth it?

Yes. A buddy of a buddy of mine drove his wife's pristine Honda Odyssey minivan into a sandy wash and promptly dug a hole sinking the entire vehicle. Don't ask, but alcohol was not involved. :) Neither winch nor tow strap were options as Honda Odyssey minivans, obviously, do not have recovery...

SPOT Announces New Device: spotX (two-way with a keyboard!)

Agree that the InReach would be better with a keyboard. I have used my InReach on multiple occasions as a 2way text device on many occasions, and actually called an SOS last March (a story in itself, which I will gladly share if anyone is interested). I don't like the Bluetooth phone pairing...

    InduraPower Batteries?

Seems to be an expensive option. FWIW, I have been running an Odyssey in my Jeep for the past three years, and am happy with it. As you know, here in AZ batteries suffer premature failure regularly. So, any battery that survives longer than 24 months, imho, is a win! I do charge it regularly...
