Just speaking for myself, but I ditched my hi lift because it was heavy and bulky...I get good results using a air cushion type lifter and a small hydraulic jack.
Passenger side. When deploying in a less than wild environment this puts the awning on the side of the vehicle that is away from the street... I can use it in more places this way.
For warm weather camping.....Army issue poncho liner. I often take two. Small, very light weight and nicely warm. Just keep them away from open flames!
You have to remember to factor in the additional resistance you get from terrain (slope, etc), how deeply mired you are, etc....its not just the vehicle weight you are pulling...you have to overcome the situation as well.
And let's not forget that a winch is most effective the closer you get to a bare drum...it pays ( see what I did there! ) to use as much line as possible.
The exhaust thing is just stupid....add complexity to your vehicle to change how it sounds.... The G is such a nice vehicle..why do so many want to turn them into BLIN (G)s?
Going to publish a report? It sounds like a great trip. I have been up in Sweden a couple times, but haven't been to Norway yet...definitely on the list!

Yes, that would make sense...and you are right about needing to modify it to be able to turn on and off. Seems that it turns on whenever you engage the locks....and it will blow seals.
It doesn't answer your questions, but it is a kind of neat aside point.... Did you know that UniMogs actually pump air into the diffs, etc to create a slight over pressure condition to keep water out during fording Ops.....
