The receiver hitch assembly is one of the most well engineered structures on a vehicle. It typically has a known 'rating', which is better than 90% of other devices I see bolted to vehicles. We typically don't know what the FoS was when it was designed unfortunately, but it was intended to last...
Another 'safe' option, if you get caught without the proper gear, is running the strap in a Choker (edit) configuration around the main crossover tube of the hitch assembly. This is generally a large diameter tube with soft corner radius. By the book, you give up 20% of the strap capacity...
My SSRA, Soft Shackle Reciever Adapter, 'SaRAh' Device. This is what I use to provide the safest possible connection when rigging to a receiver hitch. This device removes an extra connection point while providing proper support for the hitch pin and safe working radii for the soft shackle which...
Condolences to the family.
That is a LOT of leverage on that tube, roughly a 5:1 mechanical advantage. It looks like the failure happened right in the heat effected zone at the toe of the weld for the gusset. It also looks like the material is a 'clean' tear with no real evidence of an old...
A spare tire has it's own weight, space, and visibility compromises.
You have 4 tires, why only carry one spare? Why not 2? Why not 4? Everyone is going to have their own line in the sand and push different boundaries. Most motorcycle travelers, even some that do a LOT of rough international...
In general, I believe most of the WLL 'ratings' are seeing in the market are just CYA marketing with little actual value.
Anything WLL rated, should also have a FOS ( Factor of Safety ) available and listed. This IS available for most metal shackles used in overhead lifting at places like...
Good to hear. With my smaller V10 air pump, the filter will probably outlast the rest of the vehicle!
I have had VERY good performance out of these filters in my old Flatty and the #LX45. A little tap-tap to remove any big chunks is all they have needed for a long long time. I think the one in...
Air cleaner upgrade.
An air filter change on =AZUqy5PE30DXk4xpf-Yy_2U0q0NyKxqu8QnIgS384Q-M5Zaiku2PGMv9z-REFl7KIZSJuJidIWS8j_T4oYlZ_DXFg6BV6zAszu7RDNgC_R21E1nXq09XL9ShzQxSfOthMGk&__tn__=*NK-R']#ProjectBlanco this morning. The stock 5.4/V10 filter on the 05-07 Superduty is frankly kinda lame...
I'd love to see some more options in the market for runflat inserts with beadlock wheels like the hummer wheels. Those can be limped a loooong way. The downsides are weight and that you can't air the tire down as far without having strike issues with the tire.
Another avenue to investigate. Commercial tire sealants like Slime, or even something like liquid laundry starch, can help keep a small leak from becoming a larger problem. I think that combined with an aftermarket ( or OEM ) TPMS setup would give the operator even more time to spot potential...
Still likely a better plan to pull yourself out backwards and look for another road or a different path.
If you just HAD to get in....turn around and pull yourself in backwards.
This would be a solution that works today without any custom fab. As I mentioned, he can add a front hitch when one...
Here is my current tool bag in my #LX45....
I keep a similar tool bag in most of my vehicles. These are built in my #TitanToolBag and I generally build the kit(s) around that available space. They aren't typically packed full as I HATE having to fight to get things in and out. I typically...
Just run a normal receiver mounted winch on the rear hitch. How often are you going to want to pull the new truck through the mess you just got yourself into vs back the way you came? You can always add a receiver hitch in the front later if you find a glaring need.
Completely agree with airing down, the trail pressure for most of my vehicles is in the single digits. I will also say that running an aired down tire on the highway is possible for FAR longer than most people think, but there is a limit, especially with extra weight in higher temps.
The...
Some repairs on the #LX45 to keep it driving while I work on some more improvements.
-Power Steering pump was replaced again. This was another Napa/BBB 'new' pump, but this time I decided not to internally hot rod it, but I did keep the smaller pulley. I also flushed the heck out of...
It depends how cold we are talking, any battery is going to take a huge hit in performance at low temps.
Most of the REALLY cold arctic type environments either don't shut the vehicles off at all, plug them in, and/or pull them inside a heated building.
