How many of you make sure to bring protection when on the trail?

I am, perhaps, less concerned than most, but I do carry some protection when I travel in remote places. The biggest need for protection is not any danger associated with wildlife. Near the borders, or in many areas of the West you may inadvertently come too close to a pot field or meth lab, or...

    Zipper lube?

For plastic zippers... If the zippers are some form of plastic, I recommend 303 Products' Aerospace Protectant. Spray on, wipe off. Slick and doesn't collect dirt like a wax coating will. Even brass zips can get corroded, which is why I like a Delrin zipper on outdoor gear.

Camper Shells: your experiences and suggestions

Mark -- there are a couple of ways to attach a standard gutter mount rack system. The Yakima Landing Pads are a good way to go. I use them on my trailer top and have Thule gutter mount towers. If you already have the Yakima Top Loaders and Control Towers, just use them. Mount them as far...

Camper Shells: your experiences and suggestions

ARE, Glasstite and tents Mark I have used both Glasstite and ARE shells. The ARE are the best construction I have seen, and they will do custom stuff. When I buy my new pick-up, it will have an ARE topper. We sell AutoHome tents to people who mount them on their pickup toppers. The fiberglass...

Need Mac Advice: Help Scotty to the dark side...

Scott Welcome in from the cold. I LOVE my Mac, and I have been using Intel/MS stuff since Microsoft began in business. After six months using the MacBook Pro there is no way I would go back. If you have Windows specific software that is mission critical, install Parallels Desktop and load Win...

    Auto electrical book?

I've used a couple of marine electrical books. The 12 Volt Bible is a good one, and very helpful in accessories wiring. Check West Marine or a chandlery near you. Mike

Totaly off topic, Gun law question

Driving drunk, loaded gun in vehicle, God knows what else they did. Your avid gun collector friend was close to becoming a felon, and losing his right to keep ANY guns. Your pal is an idiot.

How do you keep all those loose items sorted?

Graham I use a drawer system, and Sears tool bags to keep order. In the trailer I have a kitchen 'chop box' with trays and drawers for storage of cooking/camping equipment. Binoculars, digital camera and GPS ride on the dash with a cap and other stuff. The visor has a pocket for sunglasses...

    Opinions/Input - GMC 1/2 ton 4X4 pickups

No. In fact, quite the oposite - I have owned - and currently own - Ford trucks. I spoke with a couple of dealers who indicated that Ford will 'probably' introduce an F-150 with a six cylinder diesel (I6, I think). If Ford has a competitive offering at te time of purchase (late next year) I...

    Opinions/Input - GMC 1/2 ton 4X4 pickups

The first reason is that I don't need a 3/4 ton truck. I had a F250 diesel and liked it - but never needed the extra 'capacity'. I would like to have the Allison 6 speed automatic transmission, tho'. Second reason - I want the new high mileage 4.5L diesel V8 - they are saying about 25 MPG and...

    Opinions/Input - GMC 1/2 ton 4X4 pickups

I am consdering buying a 2009 Chev or GMC 1/2 ton PU with 4X4 and the newly announced 4.5L common rail V8 Diesel engine. Planning on dual cab, short bed. Would like the Allison 6 speed, but do not know if it will be an option. I will use it for long distance trips to hunting, fishing and field...

Do you guys have a piece of legendary gear?

Yep! I bought my first pair in Munich in 1981. Carried them in Canada and all over the Western US, Mexico, and the Caribbean. Lost them out of my duck boat at South Klamath one miserable, snowy day. Went out and immediately bought another pair. Don't leave home without them!

How does one camp with a pooch and a RTT?

I travel with dog crates in the back of the cruiser, the dogs travel and sleep in there. That's enough togetherness for me.

    Lens question

I use a 24mm f2.8 wide angle on my Nikon 35s and it is distortion free (obvious distortion, anyway). Much wider than that and you are going to get some distortion. If I were you, I'd use the zoom, until you decide you really want to get into photography, then you'll know what kind of shooting...

    &*!#@* Hunters!

Looking for the archaic form and meaning of the word miltia, I found this interesting citation - "I ask, Sir, What is the militia? It is the whole people...To disarm the people is the best and most effectual way to enslave them." --George Mason (One of the framers of the U.S. Constitution)...
