I don't think this is necessarily true. A welded on recovery point isn't any stronger than a properly designed bolted connection. The problem is that it has to be properly designed. Honestly, I put the most faith in OEM tow/recovery points over a lot of stuff I commonly see in the 'aftermarket'...
