    My next overland rig??? HELP!

Any generation Suburban 3/4 Ton 4x4 (full floating rear axle, heavier duty mechanicals) From the rear gate to the back of the front seats is over 8ft in length -- will comfortably sleep a 6'3" person with room to spare Factory three-across front seating options, can retrofit from pickups if...

    post your Suburban pics

I run 285/70-17s on H2s on my 8.1L Sub as well. Fit great, no rubbing, no issues, better fuel economy.

    F150 suspension mods, Help needed

Whaaaa? The EcoBoost makes 375 lb-ft at 1,700 rpm (and 420 lb-ft at 2,500 rpm)-- much more than a 5.0L V8 does at the same rpm. You're utilizing the low-end torque curve and keeping the turbos on boost with lower gearing, or effective gearing with a larger tire.

    Excursion vs. SuperDuty

While it may have had nothing to do with performance or toughness, they stopped making Excursions because not enough people actually bought them -- anywhere For example, in 2002 Ford sold just under 30K Excursions. That same year GM sold almost 230K Sub/XL/ESV. By 2005, Ford only sold 15K...

Anybody run load range C tires?

If you're considering a particular load range tire (P-XL/C/D/E/F/...) consider that the actual load capacities will vary with size. For example, my LT285/70-17 D-range have a 3195 pound rating per tire The LT245/75-16 E-range they replaced have a 3042 pound rating per tire So a set of D range...

    Short Bed vs. Long Bed

Please consider the responses you see here based on where they live.....daily driving a crew cab long box in Montana is going to be quite different than the OP in Los Angeles. Also consider breakover angle.... it's possible to bottom out the center of the frame or TC on with such a long...

    Excursion vs. SuperDuty

Or, just buy a new loaded 3/4 ton gas Suburban for less than $60K and have an extra $50K left for modifications and fuel. You'd really have to have blinders on to have them build you a 'new' Excursion

Will 285/70/17 tires fit on a stock 2003 Z71 Tahoe?

I hope you guys realize that a taller tire requires an odometer correction, or a correction factor when you calculate your fuel economy. For example, a 285/75-16 is covering 630 revolutions per mile, where a 265/75-16 requires 654.....a 4% difference. So if you're not correcting for it, the...

    Gigantor - a 2000 Ford Expedition 4x4 build

Whaaaa....???? First, the 4.6L and 5.4L were notorious for stripping and breaking plugs. They're all the same head-style (V8/V10 modular family of SOHC/DOHC motors). Second, the truck's 4.6L, 5.4L, and all V10s were cast iron blocks. Not aluminum. Ever. Did you mean aluminum heads?

Will 285/70/17 tires fit on a stock 2003 Z71 Tahoe?

Maybe. I run them on my 3/4 ton Suburban of similar vintage. My torsion bars are adjusted higher to accommodate. Whether there is a difference in a half-ton Tahoe or not, I'm not sure. But they work perfectly on my truck, and effectively change the gearing enough to help fuel economy.

My 1991 Suburban V2500 Build (ideas welcome)

Rethink the 8.1L swap..... If you're going that new, do a 6.0L. But you might just want to do a 454 with the TBI (from a 1988 to 1995 C/K) The 8.1L is a big heavy motor that isn't necessarily outperformed by the lighter, newer, less esoteric 6.0L

    Cummins Trouble

Outboard oil adds back the lubricity, but there are some other additives that also have conditioners and detergents that can be helpful. I've always had good luck with Power Supply Diesel Kleen in the silver bottle

    Cummins Trouble

That used to be true. When Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel (ULSD) became the standard, fuel lubricity was halved. The VP44 relies on fuel to lubricate the internals of the pump. So you're seeing more pump failures from fuel, and not simply failed lift pumps....although the lift pumps can fail from...

full size pickups show improved mpg

GM has offered direct injection in production since 2007. It isn't new or unproven. This is just the first pushrod DI application. But that shouldn't have anything to do with the injection system itself.

    Diesel News: POST HERE

Cruze diesel makes 280 ft-lb for up to 10 seconds at a time under WOT. The 258 ft-lb rating is sustained. This is not unlike certain Porsche Turbo models. GM has stated that it will be rated "at least 43 mpg" highway, but has not released the official EPA numbers yet

fuel economy of RAM V6 with 8 speed trans

Yes, 400hp fuel injected V8s, automatic transmissions, power steering, power disc brakes, seatbelts, airbags, head curtains, four wheel drive, extended/crew cabs.....all of those things are overrated. .....just give me a 150hp flathead (that might start if I choke it just right and pump the...

    Dodge Grand Caravan

Newer than 2005 would have been a Stow-n-Go, so while they were modified for mobility, I'd stick with a 2001-2004 with the 3.8L Is there a reason you prefer the T&C/GC over a full-size van?

fuel economy of RAM V6 with 8 speed trans

Remembering that trucks are more a few times more powerful, more capable, larger, more comfortable, and have significantly lower emissions than they did in the fifties, I'd still call that a win. Wouldn't you?

full size pickups show improved mpg

They call it EcoTec 3, with the "3" standing for: 1) Active Fuel Management (AFM) that cuts down to 4 cylinder mode under lighter engine loads 2) Direct fuel injection, like a diesel, with high compression 3) Continuously variable valve timing All three 2014 half-ton motors (4.3L V6, 5.3L V8...
