full size pickups show improved mpg

True. The ring/pinion gear ratio can make a difference. But it is a system, so don't forget how those variables interact. For example, the tire is also a "gear" in the system. A Power Wagon has a 32.8" tire diameter that covers 635 rotations per mile. A base Silverado has a 30.5" tire that needs...

full size pickups show improved mpg

The Tundra sees good sales? Really? In 2012 Toyota sold 108,862 Tundras in the US and Canada In 2012 GM sold 654,152 Silverados/Sierras In 2012 Ford sold 751,654 F-series So being outsold 6-7:1 is a good job??

    Thoughts for a different rig??

I'd wait until this Summer for the all-new 2014 Silverado/Sierra with the direct injected motors (4.3L V6, 5.3L and 6.2L V8s). If you want fuel economy without complexity, that's where you'll find it. I've spent quite a bit of time in/around the 2014 and they've really improved the truck...

Project “Polar Bear”: 1989 V2500 Suburban

My 8.1L Sub has 247K miles.....drivetrain all original, and still gets 15-16 mpg freeway if I'm careful, and around 11mpg in city driving. That's not too far off what 5.3 and 6.0 Subs do. Uses oil, but that's not a big deal (to me).

New Member and Looking for opinions.

Since you have an 8ft bed, have you considered a surplus military canvas top from a M1008 CUCV GM K30 pickup?

2001 Toyota Highlander as an Expo vehicle

Even though they're both all-wheel-drive, the Highlander and the Forester are quite different. A 2001 Highlander is a front-biased (90/10) system that spins the front before mildly engaging the rears A Forester is a 50/50 split that can transfer power fore/aft However, based on what you've...

Pros of a 2000 Excursion: H-U-G-E inside....easy to build a bed platform with a real queen size mattress and still have room Based on the F250, replacement parts and aftermarket solutions are everywhere Solid axles front and rear, they're strong Leaf springs front...

    Looking at 92-99 Suburbans

It's not simply the injection system. A Vortec-era Sub ('96-99) has a completely different interior (with airbags) and other changes/updates. More horsepower, more torque, more power over a broader range of rpm, and OBD-2 for simpler diagnostics

    Looking at 92-99 Suburbans

'92-95 is throttle body injected (2bbl) and the old square dash/interior '96-99 is the multi-port 'Vortec' and the updated interior In my experience, gearing and tires make a bigger impact on fuel economy than which engine. If you're going to build it up, starting with a 2500 (3/4 ton) is a...

    Family Vehicle Choice Predicament

I've owned Suburbans for years (still have one) and had an Acadia for a year (company car) "Sufficiently low" in the Burb means 16" folded....basically a 16" bump in the middle of your plywood, drywall, mattress, etc. Possible? Yes. Realistic? No. In the Acadia, there is no bump. Center and...

    Family Vehicle Choice Predicament

Why are you currently discounting the GM lambdas (GMC Acadia, Chevrolet Traverse, Buick Enclave, Saturn Outlook)? They can swallow that proverbial 4x8' sheet of plywood without removing seats (they fold flat), where you need to remove 100 lbs of seats to do it in a 'Burb and you simply can't do...
