If your using a tent I'd say your still not really out there.. I grew up doing big back country stuff typically a week to two week trips. We packed a two big tarps. We rarely ever packed the .25 noise maker. Griz country we would pack bear spray. We started packing the .25 when the hippies in...
The smarty pants types take dirt / trail machines in from the end of the dirt road camp sites. See hauling Dirt bike thread...
98% of getting to the trail is pavement anyway ;-)
For really remote world travel most stick with stock parts for reliability and ease of getting parts when needed...
Agreed. 12v LED options are abundant and dirt cheap. 5v LED makes no sense especially given you have lots of 12v LED switches and such you can use. And if your going through the trouble of setting that up, other 12v stuff can be added as needed.
No idea where my post went. LOL.
Some of my best trips have been in the minimalist mode. The GMC little diesel fwc flat bed idea just seems ideal to me. I find my self taking the smallest vehicle I can get away with these days. If a solo trip to meet up with some guys and no dirt road travel...
Bear Spray mounted in an easy to grab spot. I hear it works well on a range of animals including two legged types. Give the time investment and gear most people invest into their vehicles. I would highly recommend added anti theft devices to the vehicle, and have a serious talk with your insurer...
My two Renogy 10watt panels generate about 1amp in good conditions. So far its worked great. But winter / shorter days charging would need more like a 40watt set up.
I sorta did a similar idea last summer. Though I used a 18amp hour deep cycle sealed lead acid battery, $28. Cheap Solar Controller $28, cheap 6 fuse fuse box $5. I have two 10watt panels I keep boxed up and just set them out when were camping.
I sewed strip LED lighting into our tent Privacy...
I sold my cherry LC because we needed 3rd row room. Got a 07 Sequoia. Identical seats to the Sienna but v8 power, off road capable and proper tires and a full size spare. I found a full 2nd row bench so we could do a full 8 butts in seats vs 7 with the 2nd row captians chairs in the Sienna. Gas...
Whats the box depth? Are you happy with that depth vs gear stowage options? Thats the one big measument I'm still trying to sort out. Needs to have enough height to stow gear but not too high its creating extra drag with the tent sitting up high. Etc
Same idea Im thinking of building for my dad so he can do trips in his G35x. His old Explorer/Xploder has 260,000 miles on it and is restricted to intown only use these days ;-) looking at finding a PWC trailer $400 target, then building off that.
Fulton between Arguello and Ocean Beach the closer you get to the beach, the more seedy the van dweller. Not kidding.. I own a place right by Park Presidio and Fulton. A well known chef parks his bunk house on wheels typically between 25th and 7th on Fulton park side curb. Keep the blue tarps...
Depends if the designer had royalty rights or contract etc. We call this splashing a hull in the sailing world of one design. In sail boats designers license builders and get royalty tags for each hull built. But unethical types splash an existing hull, tweak the deck design slightly then sell a...
I think that was the Skunk Train yard. Its still active. Froze by bits off taking it up the canyon newyrs a couple of yrs ago. Did the Elk come down to the beach? Thats always a tad freaky having one stumble into camp at night. Great picts!
Anyone build a glass boat or plane before? I cant see any typical glass topper built with chopper gun glass holding up under the weight of a RTT. Especially on rough roads. I would fully expect to put a frame under it to avoid crushing the topper. I have never seen a glass topper built with laid...
LZ great share thanks! Fun read. Hey about your sleeping pad thing. I spotted a kid this summer in an old OB he was using a low profile backpacking cot in the back of the car. I thought it looked like an interesting idea. Gives you just enough height off the floor to level things out but keeps...
I recall the turning radius difference was about 2ft between the two. SB vs LB is a question I always ask my self. Next ride will be a new 4dr midsized. LB if I think I would put a camper on it. FWC flatbed one could dream. SB if all I did was put a shell on it. Mainly for that shorter wheel...
