The alten IS a generator, a DC generator and it's putting out 660W only. Furthermore, it doesn't deliver multi-stage charging.
The Honda EU1000i which can be had for about the same price, even less "used", can output 880W AC. When used with an RV-style 60A DC multi-stage charger (for $150, or...
How often? All the time, they are normal-use situations. The difference is just how severe the abnormality is at a given time and whether it's recoverable or not. My batteries right now are only giving out a quarter of it's normal output while I run the rooftop AC. And I'm 400 miles from home...
We're trying to tell you the reason: experience - that's what you're not accounting for. Youre only considering what the batteries are rated at. You won't be operating with those batteries at 25C all the time, with perfectly clean cables and junctions all the time, with the perfect water level...
Don't we all wish we get 100AH from a 100AH-rated battery, or 40AH from a 40AH-rated one? It's very difficult to accept otherwise. Been there done that. Let us know how it worked out for you after a year, if your single battery ever lasts that long.
If you decide on a generator for backup, especially a cheap one, make sure it starts when you need it. You could end up rebuilding a caburetor at the side of the road/trail. Generators need to be "exercised" frequently in order to be reliable. 20 to 30 mins twice a month or so should be enough...
My recommendation
My recommendation for you.
Keep your starting battery and get a true deep cycle second battery, 100-200AH, 50-80W solar panel and a Sunsaver-duo controller. No isolator needed. The controller costs more but it features a built-in isolator for two batteries and will let your...
It's an interesting thought, but I thought watermakers are for sailors who have no access to land / fresh water for an extended period.
Anyway, I'm thinking if I'm on land and have access to fuel (for generator or vehicle) to run the watermaker / dehumidifier, would it not be even easier to...
On high output alternators
Be careful in your selection. Stay away from online rebuilders who trick stock sized alternators so they can deliver a high output. They won't last in a high, continuous and high current demand applications. Get the largest that you can fit in the alternator bay, even...
LinkPro
What I don't like about the LinkPro is that you have to synchronize (ie fill up the tank) that could take hours, and reportedly erratic. For the price of the unit why didn't Xantrex build a unit that analyzes instantly the entire bank or banks using modern battery analyzer technology...
This is a great thread.
One thing I'd like to comment on is the voltage drop of diode isolators. You can solve that problem by using an adjustable voltage regulator for your alternator and a battery sense wire to the battery, far from the alternator armature post. That way you can set the...
Looks like agreat safe adventure. Nice photos.
I'm not familiar with the route you're taking. Would you mind posting a high level route, Google map or otherwise. I'm interested what states you traversed, from Mexico to Canada or vice-versa. Thanks.
Edit: Googled it and sure looks very inviting.
In the boondocks / offroad backcountry (ie. where there is no sight of any human or civilization) I dump my waste at my discretion. I carry a shovel, among other things, in my mh. In suburban or urban areas, i dump my toilet casette at a gass station or motel restroom toilet and so is my waste...
This is the most stupid Ive ever heaRd, especially in the business of making batteries.
Anybody who says this is looking for somebody or something else to blame for an inferior battery. Ask Optima to explain the purpose of an automobile Alternator or Generator without using the word "charge"...
Got hold of edgestar tech support and they say tilt it over to drain and will not harm the compressor if powered back after a couple minutes after quickly tilting to drain. They would not say why they did away with the drain spout.
Id rather empty the water with a large cup and dry the rest...
Another awesome report. You guys are a rare breed of adventurers.
Malin, as usual, I love your writing and photos. Espen, you're such a stud with the guts to undertake such adventure.
Anxiously waiting for more . . .
