J8 to be built in South Carolina ???

But you have to have tools, time, and talent to build something yourself.....or pay someone else to do it. Good quality shop labor is not free, perhaps $50-100 an hour these days. I am all for building things. I would love to see more people do it. The percentage of projects that get finished...

J8 to be built in South Carolina ???

Mike, Do you know what the specific differences are on the frame to allow the increase in load capacity? With the leaf spring rear suspension, do they still retain the sway bar? How is the empty ride? With the amount of JKUs I see running around that must weigh 7000-8000lbs I have to...

Converting a factory JK/JKU hardtop to modular

I'll look it up. I am not so concerned about the female mold/form, but rather the finish on the male plug that I will be making it from. The plug will not see any stress, I think I just need to get the finish as good as possible to that transfers to the female mold/form ( that will see some...

Converting a factory JK/JKU hardtop to modular

Thank you, I will stick that on my list to read. On my truck project, I am actually trying to steal a few techniques from the fiberglass world to help me make the top panel out of metal. I really want, for no other reason than to say I have done it, to make a new top panel for my FJ45-esk...

Converting a factory JK/JKU hardtop to modular

This is a GREAT thread. Thank you for putting so much time into writing up what seems to be a very small project for you. Being able to have a shorter and more concise thread to learn more about fiberglass and composites was a great primer for me.

    Blender, My LX450/FZJ80 + FJ45esk + GM + Land Rover crazy concoction

Thanks everyone. I will be taking a little time to build this next.... I am finally going to have to break down and build myself a tube bender. I have been putting this off for a few years. I ended up calling in a favor on my flat fender for the 4 bends I needed because of time constraints...

    Blender, My LX450/FZJ80 + FJ45esk + GM + Land Rover crazy concoction

I need a faster metal printer button.... I can't believe that took over 3 weeks, I swear it only took about an hour to model that in the computer! I did take a week of vacation and nursed an L5 back injury for about another week. I re-learned a lot about how much fun it is to work with the...

Pickup cab on an 80 series chassis?

Sure, it just depends on what you want. I wanted a smaller cab with an almost 1940s truck cab feel and a modular hard top system, but Toyota. I ended up having to mostly build my own FJ45-esk cab. I started with a FJ40 tub and cut it in half. Then I pie cut it and pinched the doors so they...

Pickup cab on an 80 series chassis?

There is that old saying about wanting in one hand and doing something in the other. You could always move to another country that offers those vehicles. If you want to stay in the good ol' USA, you probably aren't going to be able to get exactly what you want all the time at fair prices...

Pickup cab on an 80 series chassis?

Some more interesting things about the 80 series chassis. -The stock front shock mounts will fit a 10-11" travel shock. The stock front coils will also cycle that much shock while keeping some preload on the spring at full droop. -The stock rear shocks mounts will fit a 9.5-10.5" shock. Stock...

Pickup cab on an 80 series chassis?

I'm building an FJ45-esk body on top of an FJ80 frame... The FJ80 chassis is rather interesting. The high pinion front differential makes packaging the front driveshaft and engine challenging. I don't like how low the rear control arm brackets hang, but it isn't a deal breaker. The front...

JK 4-door to 2-door long wheelbase conversion.....

Any more details? Leaving the B-pillar post is an interesting choice as far as architecture for the JKU platform.

    Blender, My LX450/FZJ80 + FJ45esk + GM + Land Rover crazy concoction

Nothing new on pirate, I try and keep both these threads equally updated. I'd like to use aluminum that was about .090-.120 thick. If I can get T0 material, and/or anneal it, the forming shouldn't be too bad. I will probably just use some 5000 series marine grate stuff. The depth to panel...

    Blender, My LX450/FZJ80 + FJ45esk + GM + Land Rover crazy concoction

Thank you very much for the compliments. I keep trying to push my skills as much as I can while working out of my garage :) I use Solidworks every day at my 9 to 5 so I am pretty fast with it. Honestly on this build I have not been using it as much....some...but not the entire car. I do have...

JK 4-door to 2-door long wheelbase conversion.....

Building a long wheelbase 2dr out of a JKU isn't the hard part. The J8 body sides, and now some other options, make that pretty easy. The hard part is still the top, especially if you want a hard top.

I don't know about all that, but there are a few people messing with a similar idea now.

    Blender, My LX450/FZJ80 + FJ45esk + GM + Land Rover crazy concoction

Maybe, since I am stretching the cabin area from 'stock' FJ45 length a little bit, things become a little more complicated. If I did start with a stock roof panel I would have to cut it into a lot of pieces and hope it all came back together somehow. Once you pie cut something the rear lines...
