You CAN drive a flat fender 2-3 hours, but it takes a special kind of person. You will either love it or hate it. You'll know after the 1st time.
There really isn't a ton of stuff that is honestly that good on an original flat fender, especially the military ones. Once you start changing...
You can spend a LOT more money on the flathead and maybe get 10 more hp. That said, the stock engine will get the vehicle a lot of places. The biggest limitation with the stock engine is just about ANY kind of prolonged highway use. These vehicles like to go about 45mph in stock form honestly...
The updated steering modification was worth it. After driving it for a few days it made a pretty big improvement to the steering feel. I was getting a little shake/wobble at 40-50mph that I thought was the tires. I guess it was more the steering because that totally went away.
Now I need to...
Another picture....
In general, it takes a different mindset completely to take one of these vehicles on a long trip. You have to think more like its a slow 4-wheel motorcycle, then pack and act accordingly.
A little mod after a few years....
After a few years of running the high steer conversion I built, I noticed that the washer I was using under the springless arm was bending depending on use. I was running a 1/8" thick hardened steel washer. That just wasn't enough. This new one is 1/4"...
With a 35" tire I just don't think D60/14bolt stuff is worth it. The ground clearance starts to become an issue under the axle.
It sounds like this is an in-between project. I would just put it together as quick as possible/practical and then move onto building what you REALLY want while you...
Since I like odd ideas...
Is there any room to drop the body down on the frame? It could be anything from an inch gain eliminating the body mounts to 5-6""+ channeling the body for the frame hot rod style :D
I'm a bad influence, I know.
If the 28" tire is on a 15" rim. That gives you 13" of sidewall total, half that would be 6.5". So if the tire goes flat the frame is on the ground?
Looking at the picture it looks low....but not THAT low.
At least it looks flat and relatively smooth :sombrero:
wait...what? 6.75" frame to ground?
and.....8" to the frame on a stock flatty? Que? I have like 18" under the frame rail and 16.5" under the transfer case skidplate on my little clown car flat fender thing.
I'm confused with your measurements. :smilies27
