I decided against it. I just didn't want the custom parts in the transfer case that it would have required. Honestly, 4.88s probably won't be any better than the 5.38s, just different. The big problem is these old 4-speed transmissions with the large gap between 3rd and 4th. A 1200 rpm drop is...

Yeah, a stock rig just isn't going to cut it for me. I would just rip everything out and chop, cut, rebuild it. All my work is on paper and in CAD right now. I am waiting for Aqualu to get me a quote on the body tub selected and I am sure that I will have a few back and forth changes with them...

Sure, but its not THAT big of a deal. Old iron is getting harder and harder to find.....and I just built something old...I want something 'new'

Rear suspension note... I was doing a little digging on air bags. I think this would be a good one to use... http://www.truckspring.com/products/Firestone-Reversible-Sleeve-Air-Spring__W01-358-5429.aspx Anyone know how to figure a rough spring rate based on load capacity at a given ride height?

Thinking for the day..... Frame design and permanent crossmembers. Looking at your typical TJ frame there really are not that many side to side crossmembers. There is the front tube crossmember under the grill, the rear fuel tank/shock crossmember, and the rear bumper. I am fairly sure that...

Yup, or my favorite, car-part.com Most of the major yards are pretty computerized these days and use to shipping stuff truck freight. You can also search by distance to find parts close....

To clarify.... I think this was the comment that confused Jeepdreamer. I will admit that there is a lot of stuff about using the TJ cowl, heater, a/c, steering column, and brake assembly that I like. What I was trying to say was that I see the attraction in some of the parts from the TJ cowl...

Well... I gotta admit that you've had me confused up until that last comment. I tend to be in the K.I.S.S camp of stuff and the miser end of cheapness so your back and forth between wanting both was screwing me up. Want stock axles but willing to run way deep wheels? Want to keep the budget...

Yup, that is pretty much my dream tub also. Honestly though, is starting with a custom tub costing say $5K really THAT much worse than starting with a donor vehicle that you pretty much don't end up using anything off of? I'm not saying that you couldn't use a lot of stuff from a stock...

No question it would work, but for the amount of additional work for all other changes I want to make I don't think starting with a TJ is going to be worth it. I would rather spend the TJ base vehicle money on a fresh straight Aqualu tub and fix a lot of the issues I see with the TJ frame...

This old dodge chugs on. Nothing major to report really. I think the 1st time I really towed anything with the low pressure piston lift pump was towing my Willys project over to EJS a few weeks back. I kinda babied it a bit on the way over but came back home working it pretty hard. The new...

Grab the sawzall, or have the bed made with taller wheel wells. We did Yager's rear by cutting out the entire floor and raising it 3 inches. Room for upper links (it gets crowded keeping it low), room for a little bigger shock, still a flat load floor. With longer links and keeping it low you...

For axle width comparisons, the CJ-10 in the picture has a stock D60 Chevy front with a WMS of 69.5, but stock deeeeeep offset H1 wheels. The fenders are about as wide as a regular CJ/YJ/TJ, and the 37x12.5s are about half under them. Very manageable width, they are almost completely covered...

Concerning the exhaust, you might consider changing the orientation of the muffler. I seem to recall a lot of cars with packaging problems have gone to a perpendicular muffler, perhaps across the back. Some ATV's do this as well. JKs do that too, but I think I will have to tuck in the frame...

Other misc stuff notes...mostly suspension related.... -one of the factors pushing me towards using a custom frame and Aqualu tub is the suspension. While the TJ/LJ suspension is actually pretty good in stock to near stock form in my opinion there are a few areas where I think it can be...

    Long Jeep.....chasing unicorns

Good idea. I'm thinking the exhaust is going to be a total pain in the rear pretty much no matter what. I will try and tuck the muffler up above the bottom of the frame. It is a fine line since the floor gets really hot if your get it too close, or you smash it with it too low. I will probably...

Oh the little things..... I am going to try and document a lot of the little ideas I see, modify, or have for this build PRIOR to building so that I can paint a more complete picture of the build. I think a lot of builds are totally made on the details. You learn a lot of things when you do...

I got it out and about this weekend. It was warm-ish but windy. Just about the same size as a cute girl, bigger than a VW bug....dang it! I also think I have just about talked myself into 5.38 gears instead of 4.88s. Driving around more I just don't think the 4.88s are going to work THAT...
