Back again with another craigslist 4x4 advice post.

This^^^^ . That level of rust would really concern me, as soon as you'd have to start pulling anything apart it's going to fight you with every bolt, nut, clip, etc. Suddenly a job as simple as replacing shocks turns into a nightmare with seized bolts that break, that turns into hard to find...

    Opinions NEeded: Low Temp Thermostat

FWIW I might as well add something here on the subject that I've started doing recently. ATF management is kinda a pain, few have drain plugs, level is very important, maintenance is important etc. So many of us end up having to drop the pan, or drain it all or something to change the fluid or...

    Opinions NEeded: Low Temp Thermostat

No, not a good idea, it's even a bad idea. A lower temp thermostat won't prevent overheating but will drastically lower MPG and could really effect other temp sensitive, computer controlled, and emissions items. . To prevent overheating you need to increase the efficiency of your cooling...

    7.3 F-350 expedition build

I get the impression you think a cab swap is hard, it's really not that bad. Hardest part IMO is the fenders, they need to come off(well don't need to but it's easier with them off) and a few of the things that attach at the fenders tend to rust on(inner fender and battery trays). The rest just...

    7.3 F-350 expedition build

FWIW I agree with a couple of the posters, I wouldn't have cut a CC, I'd have found a long wheelbase C&C, or I have a regular cab cab I'd have happily traded for a crew cab cab, but what's done is done. However what did you do with the back half of the cab/rear doors, I'd love to have it/them, I...

Ford OBS 7.3 manual trans or 1998-2003 manual trans 4x4 for overlanding? F250 or F350

Yes, it's tagged and covered to prevent accidental grounding which would leave the glows on whenever the ignition is on.

    Project "Autonomous" F-350

Hmm, the U-Haul really looks C&C based in the pic and of course that would make since, but 3" wider per side at the WMS would be a pickup axle. How wide is the frame at the back, C&C is 34" pickup is 37". That someone is wrong, C&C is the same width as a SRW pickup at the WMS, they are narrower...

    Project "Autonomous" F-350

You're not considering a dually pickup rear axle? The C&C(I assume) axle you have should be the same width(hub to hub) as the one in your SRW pickup, a dually pickup axle is IIRC 6" wider at the hub and 3" wider at the spring pads. I don't know the width of the U-Haul box but I'd assume this...

    Repurpose a smartphone

Been wondering about that as well, I figure the ideal GPS mapping software/app would store all the map data if needed offline, but would update it and add traffic etc. when a connection is available.

It bothers me as well that the glow system runs no matter how warm the engine is, but that's the small price you pay for rugged simplicity. The glow plug(GP) controller essentially only "reads" ignition signal and glow plug temperature, not engine or outside temps. So far I've done what I...

The cost of big tires - Is it worth it?

Ya know we're all talking to ourselves apparently, 5 days and 41 posts later the OP can't be bothered to reply to his thread.

Ford OBS 7.3 manual trans or 1998-2003 manual trans 4x4 for overlanding? F250 or F350

It will prime itself without doing anything but yes you may run out of battery first if there is a total loss of prime and you don't do anything to help it a long, there is no manual prime built into these engines. Several simple things can be done to help it a long. The first of course is...

Ford OBS 7.3 manual trans or 1998-2003 manual trans 4x4 for overlanding? F250 or F350

FWIW I really only talked about ATF as an additive cause it came up, but yeah these others are better lubricants. I personally don't like paying for oils to use as fuel additives, I use waste ATF and WMO a fair amount though.

I'd be more then happy to trade you a V-belt setup for a serpentine setup, I'd rather have a serpentine. . ATF is pretty commonly used in these engines for several things. First as an additive for the fuel to add some lubricity back to the ultra low sulfur diesel to make the injection pump(IP)...

Really, really want to get rid of my 700R4 in 88 suburban and upgrade

What's the engine? . I'm with rayra, something is wrong, first guess would be the lockup in the converter, either it's failed or the controls have malfunctioned. It's not complicated and should be easy to diagnose. . The 700R4 is a darn good tranny and should be able to handle anything any...

    1974 crew cab

We had a 74 2WD crew, 390 4bbl, 4 speed when I was in my late teens, it was a blast to toss 5 buddies and some coolers in it and go get in trouble. . Oddly enough on the short bed crew thing, ford didn't make crew long boxes of this generation or earlier, but later only made crew long boxes, no...

Ford OBS 7.3 manual trans or 1998-2003 manual trans 4x4 for overlanding? F250 or F350

Yeah I picked up 3 HMMWV winches cheap a little while back(24V M12000), want to run them 24V assuming I get them working, they need a little TLC. My intention is to add an isolated ground 12V alternator and a 3rd battery. Want to do it this way in part cause the 3rd bat and an isolated ground...

Ford OBS 7.3 manual trans or 1998-2003 manual trans 4x4 for overlanding? F250 or F350

Winch can't be connected to just one battery, the batteries are constantly connected to each other, connecting to one connects to both. . Ya know this rig isn't 24V right, I've run mine on one battery often. . Don't have a lot of off hand knowledge with that serpentine system, mine are V-belt...
