Post war 4x6 civilian Jeep trailer with factory tailgate – probably made by Converto
The suspension is rugged and reliable Jeep CJ7 rear springs, hangers, shock mounts and u-bolts. Monroe trailer valved shocks. I disassembled the leaf springs, cleaned and painted each leaf and installed all new...
It's too much money. Period. Full Stop. The XJ was one of the best products Jeep ever produced in my opinion but that's just too much scratch. It is after all just an XJ - they made millions of them and they aren't terribly complicated or exotic. Markets for everything are crazy right now...
I did something very similar with a Chevy LUV step-side box which is just a small sheet metal tub with tailgate and a few ribs underneath. I think it was 18 gauge but don't remember for sure now. It "oil canned" at first even with the factory ribs. In the end it worked fine with a little more...
Tents. No matter what people may say the simple fact is they suck in the rain, snow and especially the wind regardless of being on the roof or ground. I live in the West where it's typically raining, snowing or windy so anything tent is not acceptable to me. I also like being able to stealth...
My little off road trailer is set up with matching track width and wheels to the truck. The trailer is small, so not having a spare on board is convenient and I can see the super wide fenders in my side mirrors. It has "the look" too which of course doesn't hurt.
If I were to do it again...
In the aluminum contractor shell I would just clean the metal well and install self adhesive carpet tiles on the sheet metal surfaces in between the framing ribs. That should be sufficient to reduce condensation and a little bit of outside noise.
I wouldn't bat an eyelash at running that setup. On the trailer something with a solid rib outer tread block would be better but the AT is a fine tire. Personally, I don't see why the trailer and truck have to be exactly the same tread as long as they are the same size but that's just me.
It takes some fortitude to chop up a brand new truck, especially modern ones with all the whiz bang sensor driven doo-dads. Good on you; I would be too much of a coward.
That's unfortunate. I have been buying from them for years with really good luck. I wonder if they are suffering from the real or contrived covid related road blocks.
Find a clean used pop-up camper. Most of them have room for a porta potty and many have forced air heat. A basic electrical system is already on board that can be easily improved as necessary. Nicer models are equipped with 6 gallon LP water heaters and outside or sometimes inside showers...
Sorry, no pictures. I grew up well before the Instagram culture arose so photographing everything I own or do never occurs to me!
There are more than a few photos and videos floating around the interwebs showing them in the wild. Outdoor gear lab website has a pretty spot-on review with good...
Camp Chef Sherpa combines the table and chuck box into a lightweight and quick to set up unit. All you do is drop the legs and it's good to go - just takes a few seconds. It wouldn't mount outside obviously, but I find mine to be pretty handy and like that it can get tossed in the truck or...
I am not sure about availability in the great white north, but there are aluminum bolt together trailer kits available from places like Northern Tool. They offer a 4x8 and a 5x8. Some home teardrop builders use these with good results. The trailers are obviously imported from China so I...
I would absolutely toss those leaf springs on as-is and see what it does. Remember, truck suspensions and trailer suspensions behave very differently. Much of the trailer's articulation is happening at the hitch so the springs are primarily there to hold up the weight. Also, most of us have...
I've tried to "math" it out more than a few times with mixed results. For the trailer build plan, I believe you have too many variables present to try and predict what it's going to need spring rate wise. My advise is put it together and try it out. It's easy enough to add or remove leafs to...
I have precisely the same thing under my 4x6 civilian Jeep trailer - down to the extended shackles. I will echo the above -it's a great set up that tows really well both on and off road. It's never done any extended washboard so I can't speak to that however. When I first put it together I...
