"... the Japanese-built 4Runner shares the tough, fully boxed frame of the Land Cruiser Prado"

http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/car/09q4/2010_toyota_4runner_v6-short_take_road_test

"...Basics: Like the Tacoma pickup and FJ Cruiser, the Japanese-built 4Runner shares the tough, fully boxed frame of the Land Cruiser Prado, a sort of Land Cruiser “Lite” sold in overseas markets (and in the U.S. as the Lexus GX460)."

Not accurate. The Tacoma is NOT fully boxed and the frame is made by DANA in the US. Different frame than the FJ and Prado (although very similar).

Thought I would give an update on this rig. Its still awesome and stock.
We have had a hellova winter up here in the Sierras 10/11 with over 628" Snow this season so far- thats 52 feet.

the Runner performs excellent in snow and ice. Plowing through feet of snow up our driveway regularly.

Just returned from a quick getaway loop thru the Northern Part of Death Valley NP. Many here probably know of the loop.
Stole the Wifey's ************ 4x4 and took a solo day trip out to Saline. Went through the beautiful Eureka Valley, over Steel Pass into Saline Valley and out North Pass to Big Pine- perfect weather, fabulous soak, FUN wheelin. Left Mammoth at noon and in my own bed by 11pm.
Heres some shots of Dedeckera Canyon, sorry they are lousy- I was solo. didnt spin a tire or scrape anything.

Nice mini trip report and follow up with the 4Runner. That canyon puts the fear in me.

Your taco would be fine, Flippac may be a bit tough. couple tight spots but no problem for the Runner width and then some to spare. The tough stuff comes once your out of the tight canyon. MILES of twisty washes filled with rocks- not tight or scary but long and tedious (fun but long) with no resting of the senses. Payoff is in the Springs :)
Im gonna attempt it in the Crewmax once i can get a set of sliders on it.

Was the north pass closed still? I really want to check out getting to the springs from Eureka Dunes via Dedeckera/Steel Pass.

North Pass is open and mostly DRY. Cleared up near the end of first week of April. Temps are perfect in the High Desert, waterfalls are pumping and the flowers will be in full bloom within the month.

Plan on the better part of a day to do Steel Pass to the Springs at an enjoyable pace. I moved along and was at the Springs from Eureka in about 2.5 hours.

Long overdue update:
Still working perfectly! Had a few more adventures, wife has decided a couple upgrades were in order ;)

Purchased and received a Shrockworks Front bumper with full light guards. still need to take the time to install it. Nice deer-stopper!

this, of course, will also mean we will be adding a lift to atleast the front of the runner to compensate for the weight. XREAS matched shocks will all come off. Most likely i will man up and get a complete kit.
Overland Warehouse has a nice 2.5" suspension kit using Radflo Coilovers that is catching my eye :) ICON is an option, but more expensive.

No decisions yet, Xmas is coming :) Any opinions?

I already installed the OW lift and I have the SW bumper sitting in my garage to hopefully install this weekend. I like the lift for the ride quality.

Cheers,
Greg

With lightening speed!!! i have finally installed the Shrockworks front bumper.
Removal of oem bumper was fairly straightforward and without issue.
Pull the skid. First you roll around the top of the grill, bottom of bumper and inside of fenders- removing all screws and body clips as you work around. Then- starting at each end of the bumper at fenders, you just start firmly but gently pulling at the bumper. It just starts popping and pulling off- dont forget to unplug the turn/fog lights before the full plastic bumper comes off. Thats the tricky part. Rest is just removal of the alum. bumper and a few trim pieces.
I have heard complaints regarding the instructions included, but honestly, i thought they were easy enough and touched all the areas i wanted just a bit of guidance.
Install was simple and the instructions were more than adequate.
I have found, after a few of these types of bumper installs, that i can easily do this single-handedly with an engine hoist. just strap the bumper top hoop to the hoist and jack to the height. then use a ratchet strap hooked to each end of the bumper either hooked on the inside or outside of bumper to rotate/tilt it in or out so it is horizontally aligned.
Only real issue- The metal body trim pieces that mount below the headlights could be more precise, but they line up purdy good after a few trys if you dont look too critically or closely.

Awesome approach angle increases over stock, i really like that the hoops at the front corners are JUST barely visible in the drivers-seat if i peer over the hood- great for locating front corner of vehicle off-road or parking :)

Still stock suspension and no noticeable droop with the weight on the front.
