100/lx470 lift opininions

Like I said, it isn't a super ideal option for some but for others it works just great. We've done a handful of installs with Slee's switch. For lighter builds it works out great and is the optimal solution. If you have a heavier truck, your gaining artificial spring rate with the AHC override and the ride quality can suffer. I've had a couple customer come back later for us to remove the switch, pull the AHC and install a standard solution with great results. All things considered, the switch is neat concept and I think if nothing else it is a great stepping stone for a truck build, investment is minimal, installation is an hour or two and you can always sell the switch if/when you decide to swap it for a complete kit.

Thanks Kurt, just the kind of insight I'm looking for! LX is completely stock right now, so occasional wheeling (wife's DD) makes the switch appealing for the short-term.

i have a 500 buck spring compression tool that holds them rock solid, and they still give me the willies all scrunched up. its like holding a grenade.

the shocks are old, the accumulators are old, and they have had a life under zimm rule, which is a harsh life. the replacement parts are 2500.00 when the system starts to fail, which led me to the "what else in an option for 2500.00 bucks?"

AHC fluid replacement is essentially a full shock service, and will likely renew the system. Accumulator failure isn't something to be trifled with, and, from my experience, is a matter of time. But a long long time for most people.

I'd do the AHC fluid, landcruiser torsion bar and rear springs and see how that rides for a while. Cheap n easy. Possibly install rear lift springs too, if you're constantly hauling a lot of weight around. Still cheap n easy.

Do you actually have a need/want for increased ride height? Are you planning on running bigger tires? Any worries with the front diff? If the answer is yes to all of these questions then you should consider a replacement suspension. Otherwise, just run whatcha got until you have a problem, then replace-repair-upgrade instead of PM-upgrade.

And the custom AHC shock could be an option. I'd go with a fox 2.0" reservoir shock with a custom hose. The AHC firm/comfort valving does not appear to be inside the shock itself, but in the AHC system. I'd find a failed or removed AHC shock and disassemble it to find out what's inside, then duplicate the valving inside a 2" shock as a starting point. Fit a custom hose and voila you're golden. IMO the 2.5" shock fluid capacity will be a lot larger than the stock shocks, and will more likely over tax the system.

which brings up a good point, as to how much fluid the system is capable of moving. the ahc may not have the capacity to handle a shock designed to use large fluid quantities as a cooling aid. a lift, tubular UCA's, and larger/longer shocks and twice the fluid may be moved thru there.

didnt even think of that.

must be FEQ out west. was calling around to get answers on 3 different kit systems, and no one answers. :)

Meh most of the time I'd not worry about the capacity during shock travel if the diameter is close.

Fox non-reservoir shocks are dirt cheep. Drilling the end caps for the hoses shouldn't be a big deal.

Yank that air crap off and give Slee your CC#....

I run OME HD 3" in the rear of my UZJ100 and the ride ain't too bad w/o load. And when I load 1000#s of gear in it and a trailer behind it, it rides just ducky. Also, the ATAC on those is very good (for light wheeling), but no substiute for lockers.

Did you ever make a decision on this? I just bought a 100 and will be at slee in a week and a half.

Coming back to pa before the VT expo. Let me know if I can be of help !

no. im like moving an iceburg.

im leaning cheap, which means ironman (which i wanted to try their shocks, and it comes with lower a-arm gussets) or old man emu. what will likely happen, is me having some questions for Kurt (cruiser outfitters), so i'll buy off him for his input, regardless of brand. in the end, i cant see where ironman and emu could be that much different.

my big holdup is shock lengths, and the upper a arm. i want to make sure im maximizing droop with the shock i buy, if i switch upper arms later. so, a little note taking is in order. im being anal, but i know how i'll get later if i think i botched it up, and left an inch of travel on the table.

at any rate, ive decided i want 35's when the existing rubber gets to 50%, so the original equipment has to go.

I don't have the measurements with me, but I switched out my front OME shocks for TJM shocks. They were a bit longer which gave me more droop. Not only that, they were much fatter and heavy duty looking than OME. In my opinion, both off and on road performance was improved by the switch.

I'm still running rear OME shocks though, so can't comment on rear TJMs in comparison.

What's The pricing like on the TJM shocks? Surprised we haven't heard more about them if they are a marked improvement over the OME ones.
