10lb co2 tank.

The social aspect of airing back up at the end of a trail was lost on me long ago. The pros/cons are well known, so I won't cover them again. For me, at the end of the day, I don't want to sit around waiting 15-30 mins for a compressor to get me roadworthy again. After using a nice CO2 setup it would be hard for me to ever switch back.

I use a Powertank HPX regulator and exchange tanks. I started with a 20# and ended up going down to a 10#.

I recently purchased a Powertank 15lb setup and am looking forward to FAST air ups at the end of a long day on the trail. I had an MV50 and even spent more money on a bigger Viair 400C but in the end they all just kinda sucked in a slow motion kinda way. Should have just bought a Powertank to begin with.

I wish now that I had bought a 15 lb tank; maybe one day I will buy one to use with the rest of my kit. Do you know if the 15lb tank fits in the same aluminum carrier as the 10lb tank? i.e., is the 15lb tank just taller than the 10lb or is it a larger diameter also?

Is there any acceleratetd air loss due to filling with CO2? Reason I ask, is because I've noticed this when I use CO2 on my bicycle tires. I usually fill up with CO2 if I get a flat, then completely empty then refill with air at home. I'm assuming this isn't that big of a concern, but just thought I'd throw it out there.

Sounds like you've already made your move but I'll throw this out there. The Puma 12V compressor. I got mine for $150. I was able to air up my 265/75/16 from 18 to 40 psi in 75 seconds. Takes up about the same amount of space as a Powertank but has an endless supply. Also runs my ARB with no problem.

I had put together a 10lb CO2 set up, even bought a Powertank mount for it... then saw the Copper State Cruiser guys using the Puma in Moab.
I went home, ordered a Puma, and tried (and failed) to sell the CO2 set up :)

No regrets, I much prefer the Puma!

Same here! When I have a flat on my road bike and refill the replacement tube with C02, then two days later I'm down on pressure.

On the flipside, I've never had a problem with my truck. The c02 goes in there, and stays in there. Now I do have one leaky tire (I think its the rim since the rim is 40 years old...) but that isn't the C02 tank's fault.

I do carry around an MV50, but it hasn't emerged from the depths of my toolbox in like, 5 years. I NEVER use that thing. Probably should just take it out as it is taking up space.

Used to run CO2 tanks but their size and portability was always a problem especially on a harder trail where there may be large rocks (+6" dia.) strewn around. Fill ups were never an issue though. Just take them to your local beverage distributor. Filling my 10lb tank was ~$10-12 and this is in the relatively high cost of living San Jose, CA area where a place called Carbonic filled them while you waited.

These days I've 'upgraded' to a compressor (Smittybilt 2781 rated @ 5.65cfm). While not a top tier compressor, it's been more than adequite for my 35's.

My reason for CO2 is for power tools in remote places like pick and pull junk yards, I also have three offroad rigs with different uses, EXPO rig , Rock crawler trail rig, weekend type mild wheeler. So for me it was cheaper to buy a CO2 tank 15lb and move it from rig to rig.

If I only had one rig I wanted air on I would consider a nice air compressor.

I know the OP has made his choice but ill toss in my 2 cents. A Co2 system isn't that costly if you don't go buy a pre made system like Powertank. I have priced out a system with a fixed regular for cheaper than the smittybuilt tank setup and not using china amazon vendors to do it. As far as room by the time I mounted a compressor and tank that could keep up with the Co2 I would have loss the same room except I can quickly remove a Co2 tank.

All I know is when it is time to leave after a long day of wheeling I dread my slow, and loud, compressor. My friends have taken pitty me and let me borrow their tanks. Last time I filled 3, 35" tires with Co2 in the time my compressor filled 1. I have not seen any air pressure loss that people have talked about compared between the 4 tires

another reason i switched to a OBA was when i had beadlocked 40" tires i had to fill the 10lb Powertank for every other trip. Yes, the OBA is uber slow but it gave me time to give the truck a look-over before heading home.

whatever you do...

do not depend on CO2 alone. bring even a cheapy compressor.

i have spent close to $800 on compressors alone (first was ARB to power the locker and then a quick air 2, which i then swapped to a club member, for a big a** thomas 1/3 HP compressor).

i figured if the vehicle can start, i have power for the compressors. no power and well, not even a full CO2 tank will help... :(

i have been carrying 7 gallon tank so i can reseat beads (done this twice so i know it works) and if needed, air tools. might take a while.

one of these days, i will setup my own CO2 setup from scratch.

if you have the money though, POWERTANK (i have wheeled with steve of PT) is a good way to go. PT has been there for almost a decade.

20 Lb. tank

I can definitely vouche for the "buddies using up your CO2" becasue it is fast, this "fast gas" leaking out is something I have never heard before. I got 32 tires (32-33") aired up from 16ish lbs to 30+ in no time, beforeI ran out and my buddy had to find a gas station. Fixed regulator from Wheelers is awesome, get your buddies to buy there own ******** and you can use your tank for over a year, I don't wheel more than eight times a year (and if I was, $16 for gas is worth it), and I can get it swapped from the local Arcet (welding supply). Getting it filled in Moab was fuc**ng expensive, but so was the trip. Two of the big quick fists and It goes nowhere.
