10TH NW SPRINTERFEST--Sat. 5/30/15; Tualatin, OR (Note Later Date)

There's a substantial change in the timing of this year's Northwest SprinterFest, the annual low key West Coast get-together of Sprinter trucks, owners and interested onlookers. This NW Sprinterfest, the tenth, will be held on Saturday, May 30th in Tualatin, OR, a few miles south of Portland just off I-5. The change from the previous nine mid-April dates was made to comply with requests from those travelling a distance to move it closer to the summer travel season. The sponsors actually went one better, piggybacking it on annual Portland's Rose Festival celebration.

SprinterFest has always attracted a large number of rigs, from work trucks to campers and motorhomes, both the older T1Ns and the new NCV3s; last year was the biggest to date with something like five dozen trucks. There are usually dealer-sponsored demo drives and maybe a conversion company or two and other assorted vendors. I'll post up more as the event gets closer.

This is also the first year that Promasters and Transits have been around in numbers, and they are warmly invited to attend. At least one Transit conversion has commited to be there, and there may be some others.
Even though there are so far only a few Transit/Promaster overland-style conversions, I'm hoping for at least a few of the Sprinter's competition will be there to make comparisons easy. If you've any interest in these vans, either for street use or for overlanding, you should consider dropping by if you're in the area. It's a pretty nice event and a very convenient way to see lots of examples of what you can do with a Euro-style van.

(Note, too, that if you're on the opposite coast, you can save several thousand miles of driving by attending the equally-nifty SprinterFest East held in Mechanicsburg, PA. I'll post up when I learn that date for sure.)

Here's the official blurb about NWSF:

Over the last few years, we have had requests to move the SprinterFest date later into the summer travel season. So, this year the 10th Annual NW SprinterFest event will be held on Saturday May 30th, 2015 which coincides with the Portland Rose Festival. People from out of the area will have something else to do and get a "flavor of the Portland area". The Rose Festival is a huge two week event culminating with the Rose Parade, the second largest Rose Parade next to the Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena. A special event of the Rose Festival is the Starlight Parade which is 8:30 pm Saturday night May 30th. As usual, we will have lots of vendors, food and fun at the SprinterFest. In the past, we have all enjoyed checking out a variety of unique Sprinters so come on by and join in!! ProMaster and Transit owners are more than welcome to attend!! If you have questions about the event, give us a call at 503-692-0846.

Thank you,

My Sprinter shall be there, and I'll be happy to give you any and all information you can stand.

BTW, I forgot to mention that there's an on-line pre-registration form those bringing a Sprinter can use:

http://softecusa.com/sprinterwest.html

Not mandatory, but it saves a little time.

The weather looks great . . . no chance of rain. As I've mentioned a lot, this is a great place to learn about Sprinters if you think you might want one, as there's a lot of variety, pretty much every size and shape imaginable. And if you are building out a Sprinter you already have, there's no end of different configurations, materials and techniques to check out. There were about 50 trucks last year.

I didn't see Ford E-Series invited to the party. ;)
Jeremy, you of all people should appreciate the sanctity and uppityness of the German auto conclave.

Actually, it's great that Jeremy's big E-350 will be stopping by. People can try to stand up in it and then remember how pleased they are they have Sprinters. :sombrero:

SERIOUSLY, THOUGH . . .

The event is free and open to everybody. (And, in particular, if you have a Promaster or Transit, do attend, as the Sprinter multitudes will be most eager to see you.)

4x4 Sprinter Expected

And I forgot to mention . . .

I'm not saying it's going to happen--last year Outside Van was expected but didn't show up--but as of a week ago, John expected the people from Mercedes-Benz of Seattle to bring down a 4x4 Sprinter for people to look at.

See everyone tomorrow.

Haha, well anyone who wants to step into a big E350, don't show up for Vandiana as he's at another associate's for the time being for other work, sorry.
More attention for the Sprinter's and such.

YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN THERE . . .

I know, I say that every year . . .

Just a brief report to let you know that the 10th Annual Northwest SprinterFest happened without too much different from previous years. Perfect weather, and a nice lunch provided by Upscale. Everything went smoothly, which is to be expected, given it's an uncomplicated no-cost, wander-around-and-look, type of event. Kinda like Cars and Coffee for Sprinter camper vans.

I didn't hear a final tally, but it looked like we had about as many trucks as last year, somewhere around 50. Had a couple of Transits and three or four Promasters, which was good. Mercedes Benz of Seattle** had a pretty constant crowd with the 4x4 they brought down. They picked a good color and had beefy BFG ATs and added some nice off-roading bits, so it looked pretty slick. And there was a Whitefeather conversion there as well, so people who understood what they were looking at could have a good comparison.

My Sprinter attracted a nice set of interested people—I think I talk more on SprinterFest day than the other 364 combined—but the percentage of pre-'07 T1Ns is definitely getting smaller as they get older. Lots of shiny late model versions in attendance, but mostly DIY ones--many very well done--compared to people just writing the checks for a Roadtrek or Leisure Travel or equivalent. In fact, the different ways people laid out and equipped their vans remains the most interesting thing about the event. Lots of people taking pictures and making notes, and most everyone with a van went home with someone's good idea to implement in their own truck.

Same time next year, I suspect. :)

-------
** I want to make well-deserved mention of the people from Mercedes-Benz of Seattle, who have trucked down to Tualatin for Sprinterfest the past couple of years to show off a new van and answer attendees' questions. (They even brought Sprinter t-shirts for us this year, a nice touch.) The Portland metro area only has three MBz dealers and about two million people, which (sarcasm warning) is apparently not enough to warrant having our own Mercedes Sprinter dealer, so the attendance of the Seattle group is especially nice. Keith Donaldson at keithdonaldson@mbseattle.com is their Sprinter specialist and knows much about new Sprinters and their options and ordering.

PICTURES Please. I would've gone, but I was across town, working on my sprinter. Maybe next year.

Thanks for the info, any photos?
None from me, sadly. I was busy most of the time showing my own truck to people, not that I'm much of a photographer anyway. I'll keep my eye on the Sprinter Source forum to see if someone there posts any.

Sorry you didn't make it, Paddy. Good luck with your build.

Damn, I missed the Whitefeather conversion.

Did the OutsideVan guys show up? If not, very surprising they nor Van Specialties were there as that's their market.

Hard to know why different vendors do or don't make an appearance. Perhaps they have all the work they want at the moment?

That doesn't explain, though, why only a handful of suppliers of critical parts show up. Fifty vans with an average of $10K invested in components is half-a-million dollars. If I'd had water tanks or windows or batteries or whatever to sell, I think I'd have put in an appearance.

They aren't, BTW, doing any better for photos over at the Sprinter Source. Peer pressure is at work, though, so maybe in a bit . . .

.

I suppose it boils down to market.

The Sprinter fest might be good for parts suppliers but not van builders. Even then, most of the people attending already have vans and conversions.

I would bet the van builders are better off going to RV shows or sporting events (Mountain bike, Kayak, etc) Places where there are people without vans currently.
