12V Socket for Fridges: clever ones?

Good observation about the vents Graham. I will make sure that the vent areas stay unblocked when packed out for a trip, as I am sure I will be cramming most open gaps with stuff.

The lid on my fridge is grey, it is just an effect of shadow from the flash that it appears black.

Jumping into this late and didn't wade through 7 pages on plugs but the marine market is a great place to look, they have the 12v plugs and recepticles that have a "turn to lock" feature that is really slick, weather-resistant and vibration proof.

I used a Carlon 4x4x2 junction box and some West Marine outlets in my Jeep Wrangler:

My Montero has a rear outlet. I do have to check that it can handle the necessary current draw and I may need to convert it to be constant on or at least switchable.

For sure I am entering this thread ... very late, ... but ... to address your original question.

The first picture you show in the very first post is a Hella Micro Plug. These are very European and mostly used in Europe and South Africa instead of the typical 12V cig. lighter we are most familiar with here in the states.

You will also find these on all BMW motorcycles to power almost all their accessories ... including heated clothing.
They are also used commonly for powered down riggers in fishing boats for marine applications. The picture you show is exactly what that receptacle was designed for (it is a marine application Hella Micro plug) and available in the US here: http://www.sportco.com/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=42548&idcategory=144

These are also standard on the Conqueror Safari trailers used by some of us here on the Expedition Portal.
They are 12V and will work for your application. Simply just a European plug standard.

As for 12V plugs, ... most of us Land Rover folks are familiar with this company and they have excellent products:

Their raised mount is on a 45 degree angle and is pretty slick.

Also, if you are looking for some way to mount multiple plugs and/or switches, they have these mud pods that are designed for Defender 90s and 110s for the dashes, but I plan to use one in the Conqueror Safari trailer to put some 12V plugs in the sleeping bunk to plug a Hella Map light ... for reading, ... and a 12V for my Mac Powerbook 12V adaptor.

Just sayin

FYI....

The Hella plugs are also referred to as 'Anderson Type Sockets' or 'Merit Plugs'. They are more common in Europe and Australia. Some Freezer/Fridge manufacturers are stating to use them on the new units abroad.

They are used on BMW motorcycles and can be ordered through them.
BMW part number 71 60 7 653 870 - US$39
Or BMW Part #61 13 2 319 167 for an entire kit

They are used by John Deere
Female Sockets John Deere Part # AL25073 (about $4.00). or # MG82002966 (Heavy Duty)

Male plug John Deere Part # RE11344 (about $8.00)

I was talking with Will at Sierra Expeditions the other day and they are getting ready to carry a locking 12 plug/socket. It sounds very interesting and very HD durable.

They won't have them till September.

They're FINALLY here!!! Tested and meet our standards! :wings: As a forum sponsor, I am pleased to announce that Sierra Expeditions now has Engel Posi-fits in stock!

I know what your thinking... Wil, what in the world is an Engel Posi-fits? Let me explain it to you. Basically it is a locking mechanism to lock your Engel's DC plug into the electrical source.

Here is the Engel Posi-fits itself:

I know, that still does not explain this... So now you take your existing DC cord and unscrew the cigar plug portion. (Note: there is two poertions on the plug that you can unscrew one being the fuse access and the other is the "plug" portion.) You unscrew just the fused portion, once unscrewed it will look like this:

So, now you can mate your existing DC cord with the Engel Posi-fits. Once connected you then screw your plug into the Engel Posi-fits, meaning that your DC cord will not rattle out of the plug!

What are the options for the new ARB on this? In Iraq now, and my fridge is in the US, so can't look at it. Does ARB have a posi-lock?

Which ARB fridge are you referring to? The old ones were rebadged Engels, so the Posi-Fit would work.
