12V Socket for Fridges: clever ones?

I know it sounds like they are ahead, but BMW motorcycles and John Deere tractors have been using These plugs for years.

I'd recommend against Anderson Powerpoles. I'd heard great things about them, so that's what I installed in the back of the FJ for my fridge power. They have very little positive retention, so it doesn't take much for the cable to fall out.

Frankly, I think a standard cigarette lighter plug would be a step up from Powerpoles. When I get a chance I may convert to the Hella plug.

Been thinking about putting a few of these in the bed of Project Land Mass... It seems as though I see people using wire as thick as 10ga... Is that a good thickness to use, or can I get away with something thinner?

Thanks Rambrush... Seems like 10 gauge, while it does seem to be a bit overkill, might be the ticket, just for the sake of safety.

poriggity,
here is a link to my wiring- might be helpful

also note:
"Pick different color wires for your gadgets and select the fuses based on your wire size, NOT on your gadget amp draw!

Your wire size needs to be appropriate for the gadget amp draw and may have its own fuse. Remember, the purpose of a fuse is to protect the wire insulation from melting and causing a (carpet) fire.

If you oversize a fuse for a given wire, it'll smoke the wire insulation long before the fuse blows."

X2 on the West Marine plugs!

They work great when used together. But I have some equipment that does not fit well into the WM receptacles. They fit a little too loose. Just be weary of that if you use them. Or change out all the male plugs to the WM style as I have had to begin doing.

I got a accessory plug from the back of a minivan at the local pic-n-pull yard. The mini van units use a pretty heavy gauge wire.

Engel makes one that has the female on a small bracket for surface mounting. You can remove the bracket and flush mount it in a panel with two screws.

The male end is a normal lighter type plug which you remove the end when using the mentioned female part. Then you insert, screw down a collar and presto, no unintentional unplugging. Very clean install, secure connection.
