12V Socket for Fridges: clever ones?

...The male end is a normal lighter type plug which you remove the end when using the mentioned female part. Then you insert, screw down a collar and presto, no unintentional unplugging. Very clean install, secure connection.

Your referring to the Engel Posi-Fit, as noted it is a very, very secure and reliable plug connection for Engel (and re-badge) models. Any Engel dealer should have them in stock or be able to order. The new ARB models feature a similar plug which is actually a Hella plug with an adapter for conventional 12V plug use.

This little baby has well served the Waeco for 3 years now. Unfortunately it is not Expedition Rated or sold by an Outfitter. It was ~$20 from the Big River (brand is Magnadyne) and is mounted facing up on my Tuffy center console. The Waeco fridge 12V plug has rubbery fins ala Merit/Hella? to keep it secure in any socket orientation.

My installation involved advanced tool technology called dikes and a soldering iron among others. A Licensed and Bonded Professional may have quoted the install at $250, so I braved it myself.

I may also have a couple single flush mounts with rubber covers from Autozone or Walmart, but dare not horrify ExPo dedicates any further.

Hella/Powerlet socket installed in the Tuffy console of my Land Cruiser. Bought it from a Triumph motorcycle dealer.

The problem that I had with the Engel socket is that the electrical spade tabs on the back are very thin metal and will break off if bent at all. Be sure that any wires attached are strain relieved.

I have used Rig Rite connectors for a variety of 12v applications. Made for trolling motors they are very durable, weather proof and heavy duty. available at iboat. I have 2 charging ports in my off road trailer for deep cycle batteries, and the plugs never vibrate loose.

Bringing this thread back from the deep. I purchased and installed the ARB wiring harness for my ARB 50. The wiring harness its self worked great, the Hella socket did not. The problem I had with the socket was the fact that it did not secure its self, as in lock. The best item that I found was at Walmart. After searching online for a locking 12 volt plug and receptacle what I found to be the best was a trolling motor plug. For just a little better than $25.00 you can pick one up at your local Walmart. It is rugged, weatherproof and it has a push and twist lock. No more worry of the fridge coming unplugged as you bounce along on the trail. MinnKota trolling motor plug & receptacle, easy to find and easy to install. Just takes an 1 1/8" hole size for the receptacle. You will of course have to cut your Hella plug end off of your ARB fridge cord, but its no big deal. Ron

I bought the same West Marine one with also the male end. You can swap the male end from the fridge by just swapping the wires as mine were screwed into the plug.
