160° pano (using 12-24 at 12mm!) from Mosquito Pass ...

Back from two weeks in the central Rockies, with several days spent exploring passes around the Breckenridge, Fairplay/Alma and Leadville areas; I'll post a thread in "Completed Adventures" once I've gone through and processed the more than 1,500 photos I took (of which only a handful will be more than snapshot quality, of course).

As I was sorting through the lot last night I came across these and figured I'd see how PS CS3 Auto Merge does with stitching UWA shots for panos. I knew when shooting this that I was taking a risk, since wide angle -- let alone ultra-wide angle -- general don't work well for panos since they're hard to stitch. Have to say, though, that CS3 did an awesome job.

This is 6 horizontal (landscape) shots at 12mm converted from RAW in ACR, stitched using Auto Merge in PS CS3 then post processed from there as a single image. At 300DPI this is something like 36" wide.

Shot from the east side of Mosquito Pass, near the summit (approx 12,800-feet in altitude here; 13,185 at the top). Amazing views and scenery, with the West side (Leadville side) being even more spectacular; will post shots from there in the 'completed adventures' thread.

Additional info:
Mosquito Pass is in the Mosquito Range (central Rockies) which is made up of 8 peaks, 4 are 14ers and the other 4 damn near 14ers: click

History of Mosquito Pass and the area it served: click

The trail on the left is the one I'm on (Mosquito Pass Rd); the South London Mine (click for google map sat image) is out in the distance, just left of center down in that basin. North London Mine -- a cool POI along the trail, and which I have a bunch of photos of -- is at the base of the trail I'm on below/well behind me.

Great shot. I love the whole South Park/Arkansas River Valley area. That's where we plan on living out our days.

Auto merge 6 frames at 12mm - damn nice result you got from the automated tool.

I'm still using CS2 and I haven't had a lot of luck with the auto merge feature unless I used my 50mm or 35mm prime lenses (very little distortion) and overlapped a lot.

I may have to upgrade to CS3, unless CS4 is just around the corner.

Great shot, Rob. I'm looking forward to seeing some from the other 1499 photos you took.

I am NOT a fan of the Automerge function in CS2...CS3 is a bit better. I like AutoPano for my stitching. But, yours looks pretty clean actually.

Next time you do a pano, do it with the camera shooting vertically. You'll effectively double your pixels vertically and really squeeze the juice out of the camera.

Does CS3 work with the RAW files or does it have to work from a .tiff? AutoPano does not work with RAW files...it's the feature upgrade that I have wanted for a while, but the rest of the program is so awesome that I can't complain.

Nice image!

EDIT: CS4 is just around the corner...

Good news. Thanks for the heads-up.

Yup ... beautiful country. My folks have 25 acres outside Fairplay near Hoosier Pass and are building a house; they can't complete if fast enough. ;-) FWIW, I'm from Colorado but have been away too long (over 15 years now). I'd move back in a heartbeat if the opportunity arose.

Awesome shot! What equipment were you using?

Thanks. Shot handheld using a Canon 30D with Tokina 12-24 f/4 and Hoya Super HMC Pro 1 Circular Polarizer (in manual mode at f/8 using an average exposure based on metering different areas of the scene).

Indeed. Breaking the rules (UWA for pano) then letting PS do all the work (automated stitching) ... priceless. :)

Never used it in CS2, preferring to stitch/blend manually in the past (back in the CS/CS2 days ;)), but admittedly surprised with how well CS3 handled this one and another I shot the same trip (posted elsewhere on expo).

Thanks

Thanks Michael. Generally I stick to 50mm or longer and vertical orientation for panos but shot this on a whim (hence not changing from the 12-24 I had mounted).

I've also used AutoPano with good results and used to prefer manual stitching/blending in PS; this was among my first experiments (experiences) with Auto Merge and I have to say I'm quite impressed. Aside from cropping, and a tad bit of cloning in the lower corners to avoid trimming too much (shot handheld and wasn't quite level), I didn't have to do *anything* relating to overlap/blending.

CS3 handles RAW files. I tweaked all 6 images in ACR first (can be done at once or on a single image then applied to the rest using Develop->Copy Settings) then went to PS, selected Auto Merge->Files. It was a snap. Be curious how it handles stacked panos (2 or 3x vertical by how ever many horizontal).

As for CS4 ... I've already pre-ordered my upgrade (with no set release date given). :D

We're up there quite often. My sister and her family live right there in Placer Valley just below Montgomery Res. We have some land about 30 minutes south near Trout Creek Pass.
