1969 Land Rover Forward Control 2B

1969 Land Rover Forward Control (ex SADF radio command vehicle)

Agnes completed a return trip to Rwanda that was featured in SA4x4 magazine. She has extremely low mileage and a new bulletproof 300TDI engine. She's been stored indoors when out of use and has no rust. To learn of the capability of this vehicle, look to the travels of Jan and Leone Vorster who have taken their similarly equipped Dipli to 111+ countries, over 300 000km and counting. https://www.overlandhb.co.za/

Specs as follows...

- 60 000km genuine mileage (low due to nature of military service)
- 300tdi (20 000km since new, the block was purchased new directly from Land Rover UK)
- Weight is 3.4 - 3.6T, can confirm this accurately. Not registered as a heavy vehicle so a standard license has been sufficient in SA.
- R380 gearbox (low range, central diff lock)
- ENV heavy duty axles
- Land Rover 2B rims (rare) with 255/100R16 Michilin tyres (6 total)
- 2 x 74L diesel tanks, 1000km+ range
- 6km/L - 8km/L fuel economy (terrain & speed dependant)
- 110km/h max (cruises easily 90 - 100km/h)
- 6T come along winch and 10m cable
- High lift jack with 4 x customized secure lifting extension points at each wheel.
- 2 x 5T bridging ladders and 2 x sand ladders, all doubling as lockable security over windows for long term storage or shipping of vehicle.
- Keyed alike padlocks on all accessories
- ARB air compressor
- Solar system (2 x 100w panels, 2 x 105ah batteries, 1000w sinewave inverter)
- 2 x 40L Engel fridge/freezers.
- Powerful LED floodlights for driving, campsite lights, inside lights.
- 2 plate gas stove, finessed kitchen storage, extraction fan.
- 100L water tank, 12v pump, inside sink, double filtration system, outside hot shower and sink, gas geyser.
- Bluetooth sound system with excellent clarity
- 4 x camp chairs, fold out camping table
- Fly screens on door and windows
- Thoughtful selection of parts and tools curated over my 5 years of ownership (stored in my OCD like fashion) which ensures the majority of possible breakdowns can be handled on the road. This is not far off a full onboard workshop. The buyer needs only to buy their own socket set, as I won't part with mine, but the rest of the tools are married to Agnes. A full inventory list can be shared with buyer.

Level of completion:
I consider her 99% complete (will any vehicle of this nature ever be 100%?) (haha) two things I haven't got to is to install brackets on the lower bolts of the windshield so that the sand ladder, which is on hinges, can be locked when lowered down over the windshield. The other is a security barrier over the rear window, as all others have the option it seems sensible to do so, yet I haven't taken the vehicle anywhere thus far that such security has seemed necessary. These changes may not seem necessary for the buyer.
Another thing to mention is the lack of seat belts. Hasn't been a problem across Africa as she was manufactured without. It would be a straight forward job to install if needed as there is a secure mounting point as an option.

Anything wrong/problematic?
I lived in and used the vehicle around my neighborhood, Knysna, South Africa, for 3 months very recently which allowed me time to iron any niggles out (wiper motor, dash light bulbs, loose dip-stick, small stuff...) I consider her in full working order without any problems. I would confidently start an overland journey as-is.

The highlight for me when driving this vehicle is the joy she brings. She turns heads in a big way, draws smiles, looks of confusion and makes crossing borders in Africa alot easier as the border police generally are fascinated.
I am now working abroad for the foreseeable future and won't have the time to use the vehicle, so I consider it wise to part at this stage.

Asking price - 38 000 USD

Thanks for reading
With love
Mitch

Rad truck, Mitch- I've seen it before in person (I'm an American that has a home in Simons Town) only unfortunate bit is it can't be exported to the states due to the TDI engine swap. you'll have to re-install the original 2.25l-2.6l engine and get the title to reflect it or else it won't make it though customs..

I know we aren't really supposed to comment on price, but to save you and others on this forum a lot of time- they sell for sub 150k rand ($8300) in ZA outfitted with the TDI, and go for around the $15k mark in the UK all camperized. You'd be best off selling it locally on Facebook marketplace or gumtree. $38k is what collectors are paying for extremely good condition, stock, matching numbers FC's that are already state side

Thanks for the info on importation. I was not aware any issues would arise due to the engine conversion. I'm having a go at a featured ad, so this will need to be mentioned to a potential buyer once I do further research into it.

As for the price, I appreciate your mentioning your thoughts, though I don't think think one is directly comparable to others in the country with all it's upgrades, practically new 300tdi, sand ladders from Czech, 6 x Michelin tyre's at R13k each etc etc

That being said, I will drop the price a bit.

There is a buyer out there who'll know the difference between this one and other conversions around

Cheers appreciate your thoughts
Mitch

"Importation of Vehicles Over 21 Years Old: EPA has long interpreted the equivalence requirement to mean that the engine must be identical to the engine that was originally installed. Such an engine is one that is the same model and configuration as the original engine."

Here's all the info you need- quick answer is it's not compliant. You'll spend a few years, and 4x your asking price to get the ICI to certify it, but I have some friends that have successfully done so with resto mod 911's, imported as show and race vehicles then after years and lots of money spent managed to get them plated for Arizona and Montana. Good luck with the sale.

Best to mention the import issue in the first line, also mention that you'll carry the title for a foreigner wanting to use it in Africa on a police affidavit system in ZA. I've successfully done this with over 5 vehicles two which are overlanding in Kenya, and another which is in Bolivia doing the Pan-American all ZA reg

No disrespect , but I don't think that importing is an issue. It's a vintage vehicle and customs won't even know where to start. Plenty of old (25+ yrs) modified vehicles have been imported.

I imported a 1991 Hino Ranger fire truck. Imported to Virginia, titled same, re registered in Utah. Drivetrain documentation did not exist. As in they would have zero reference to even work with or judge it from as those truck came with many different engines and configurations and all the factory documentation was in Japanese. Nothing any competent used importer couldn't achieve. These old trucks don't even need emissions. Typical California caveats apply.

To the OP, just WOW. This is one of the coolest rigs I've seen on here for a while. GLWTS.

Thanks you legend!! Good to hear some positive feedback

Looks thoughtfully built. And extremely cool with CX plates. GLWS.

Just to add: foreigners can get a Traffic Registration Number (TRN) in South Africa and register this truck in their name. It is possible (albeit laborious) to do this on a tourist visa.

Then easy to store the truck it in Cape Town, Plett, or Joburg and use it for overland travels across Africa.

Im encouraging community members to refrain from speaking negatively on people's for sale ads.

When someone is selling something that will get refused at customs and you are on the hook for shipping it back, should this not be discussed?

It will get refused with the 300TDI. CBP is very picky about this.
