If you don't now, you probably will just end up doing it later:ylsmoke:

Love your rig by the way......

yeah, plus i already have the shafts out and the thing is on the bench in my back yard.....might as well do it.

Worst case scenario and i want it gone it'll be 2 hours of work to pull the drums, slide out the shafts, remove the locker and replace the spider gears I figure.

Looks like i have my project for tonight.

Nice score. I agree on installing the locker now, plus it will make your offroad experience that much better.

It will adversely affect my on road driving ability, especially in the rain. No it doesnt rain here often but when it does the streets turn into freakin' skating rinks because of the oil buildup. Downright dangerous.

So, after working on things a bit last night i realized that on the D44 I needed to pull the carrier. That notion scared me. As did the notion of removing the ring gear, punching out a roll pin, and needing to get it all back on properly.

I talked myself out of the locker.

Well then a buddy said "bring me the carrier tomorrow and I'll do it. So I manned up and pulled the carrier. then i had a beer and manned up the rest of the way. (don't mind my harbor freight infested super messy workbench...that's all model building/kydex working stuff)

looks right enough to me, but what do i know?

Brought it to work, threw it in a vise, loctited and torqued em down.

So, yeah. Looks like I have a locker now. All i need to do is put it back in and drive it without it exploding.

Don't worry about it in the rain. Drive appropriately and your long wheelbase and heavy weight will damp out the quirkiness of the locker.

No not fat.
horizontally challenged maybe. It's a good club to be in, I'll save you a beer.

Wow! the internet is a small place. I'm doing well, same ****, different jeep! you?

No kidding lol. And I'm about the same, I keep bouncing between 4x4s, but finally have one I want to finish building like I couldn't do to my TJ. Too bad I can't drive to work with it, but I'm not driving the beast 360 miles one way every two weeks lol. Your Jeep is looking good man.

(yes i know u bolts are crooked in pic).

buttoned her up this morning and went for a ride. Started driving down the road at 30 minutes and the diff started popping randomly. The damn locker kept unlocking (sides switching radnomly) any time there was load (even just maintaining speed). Getting on the highway was interesting, popping and throwing the jeep left and right every few seconds. Happened constantly while driving in a straight line.

My tires were aired up evenly.

Got home pulled the diff cover and everyhting looked fine. the teeth on the locker looked SLIGHTLY worn (hell only drove it 25 miles but it must have unlocked 150 times). Said screw it.

Pulled the shafts, pulled the carrier.

ahhhhh, back to the way jeep intended it:

Screw that thing. When i pulled the cover, and started pulling the shafts i had one tire on, and one tire/drum off. I was turning the hub by hand (trans in neutral) with the other tire off the ground, and it kept unlocking! the only resistance on the opposite side was the weight of the 33" tire, and the transmission in neutral. What the heck?

Junk. Oh well, no big deal, just a few hours and like $15 worth of diff fluid.

will torque down the ring gear tomorrow and get everything bolted back up after work, and refill the diff.

That is very weird. I had one I put in the rear of my d35/YJ wrangler back in the early 90's and it never did that even with it being a manual. When I upgraded axles, we put the lockright in another friends YJ until he upgraded his rear axle, if never did that. We moved it to another buddies YJ and it never acted like that, he upgraded axles and I gave it to another guy, don't know about his experience, but that locker saw a bunch of miles and at least four rigs and it was never a problem like you describe. The same locker was installed in four different axles.

Another friend put one in the rear of his scout II in the early 90's as well. Spec'd out much like your wagoneer, v8, auto, d44 on 33's and the only time you could tell his was installed was in parking lots, it would "click" as you turned corners and of course off road. Other than that, it just worked.

I wonder if the clearances were off a little on yours or if there was something wrong with the springs or center pin?

They are very simple and forgiving. I have never heard of one acting like yours.

Sorry to hear of the issues.
