Here is a drawing I did of a roof rack supported between the top and bed. I think it would seal fine along the side but the top might leak where it meets the cab.

I really like this idea but i see one issue. you're going to have to notch where the feet bolt onto the bed rails. not a huge problem but one worth noting. I installed some of the foam tape you use to put on a normal topper to better seal my top and i really had to fight with the top 4 bolts to get them to align properly. and that stuff isn't very thick at all. but i like this idea and have contemplated doing something verry similar.

Unless I am mistaken, none of the first gens had rear heat.

1st gens were available with rear heat (though rare, and often removed) - IIRC the heater core sat in the passenger side rear "cubby hole" by the tailgate. First time I heard of it was on 4crawler's site, his '85 originally had rear heat

My old 87 had rear heat, and the remark above is correct, the core was in the back. Never did work right...

I didn't realize it was a rare option. It takes up alot of room, so my center console doesn't do much except hold a pen and a tire gauge.

Wow, I didn't even know it was available. Where were the vents for it located? Was it a different console or did they just have vents under the front seats?

My 84 4Runner the rear heater core and blower was under the center console.

Cut that bad boy off and took her down the road.... drove like a loud dream!

Don't call it good yet! unless it just broke free and blocked the flow something else may have caused that to fail. I would run it through an emissions check the output. The muffler shop you are taking it too might be able to do this.

High NOX would be an indicator of a lean issue and over heat it and it melt. High CO would be an indication that it may have clogged up. If you see either of these I'd put a O2 sensor on it and retest.

Regarding the wet interior...

If your current efforts don't resolve the problem, I had a leak that turned out to be a poorly sealed windshield. Just an idea.

And check the vent windows. I have one that leaks a little every now and then, mainly when you spray water directly at it. Mine doesn't leak when it rains.

x2, mine broke free of the glue along the bottom edge - I'm just too lazy to pull the windshield and reseal it at this time (well winter doesn't help much either). Take a playing card and try to slide it between the glass the glue/sealant at several points along the edge of the windshield (push on the glass a bit), if it slides between the two you'll know what needs to be done
