1987 toyota bandit,

Would any of you know what it would take to turn this toyota into a 4 wheel drive unit. It has the 22re engine and tranny. It is a single axel.

if it is a 22R, I would think it would be fairly easy to do a drive train swap since they used those for the 4x4's as well.

The suspension and frame modifications may be the toughest part though.

I know 4x4 conversions have been done on early Toys, but I have no experience there.

However, if it is on a standard wheelbase, and depending on the miles on the chassis, maintenance done, your skill set, etc. you might also consider putting the camper body on a low mileage 4x4 chassis.

I'd second that, unless the camper is a walk-through, looks like it is?

If you have decent fabricating skills it wouldn't be too hard. Get the tranny and t-case from a 4wd and for the front axle use either a toyota axle or a dana 44. You might even be ahead of the game if you are able to use the 2wd steering box for crossover steering.

Where did you find this camper? There's a similar unit, described as a 1985 model, on Craigslist near Milwaukee.

I found it in N.Y. The guy wants $4500 for it. It has high milage and a new head and timing chain. It also has a little bit of rust on hood and bottom of doors.

I was thinking I could put the camper on my Troopie. But I would have to cut the top off and the sides.

Search for "Toyota SAS" - solid axle swap. What started with people cutting off the IFS suspension of the 86-88 4x4s to install a solid axle went to doing it on later models and 2WD versions as well. Take your pick of Toyota axle, D44, D60, or custom 9" among others.

Are you really thinking of cutting your troopy in half?

That and these Toyotas look really sweet! I have to say though they look really heavy too. Without a lot of engine mods I have to wonder how they do at speeeds over 60mph. Passing might be an issue too. And how do they handle with the weight?
