1989 4runner build

Finally got a chance this last week to go put some dirt miles on the 4runner. Put 800 miles on it racing around forest service roads and the blazeland kit handled everything amazingly. Even the wife was having fun, although she wants me to upgrade to a 4 door tacoma to feel safer and have more room with kids and two dogs. The 4runner has been averaging 16mpg city driving and 20mpg highway and has plenty of power to go over mountain passes with ease. So much better than the old 3.0

Here is a slow mo video of the 4runner going about 50-55. The rear suspension needs some serious upgrading and I got permission from the wife to spend whatever I want on the rear suspension.:Wow1:

Well bad news... yesterday I found a 96 4runner limited for a price I couldn't pass on and also got an offer on my 4runner for same price as the newer 4runner. Picked up the new 4runner last night

Waiting on payment for the 89 4runner so the build has stopped. The new owner is a friend so hopefully will update it down the road.

Nice find. I sold my 89 4runner after I bought my 97. I love the 97 but man, nothing will replace the 1st gen... besides another 1st gen.

Couldn't agree more - Congrats on the new rig! I wanted something newer than the 89 so I got myself an 06 - but kept the 89 :)

Got plans for the 97 or is it going to remain a stocker?

I am debating keeping the 89, but selling it would allow me to finish all the mods I want to do on the 97 by end of next summer. As for the 96 the plans are front and rear bumpers from 4xinnovations with swingout tire carrier, ARB locker in front to go along with elocker, icon stage 5 suspension, onboard shower, arb fridge, rooftop tent, and awning.

Looks like I just picked up your old 89’ Looking forward to giving her a little love and enjoying it for years to come. I build bike trails, so it’ll see plenty of forest service roads and wilderness!
